A. .|. mvvm Facts and statistics are now be- ginning to indicate the devastating effects of the liquor traffic on the whole of our social life. Last year Canada spent $156,000,000 on legal sale of liquor to say nothing of tho illegal sole. If you were to trans- late these figures by comparison with the trend of business in gen- eral, you would find the following astounding facts: In the year ending last January. Canada exported wheat and flour to the value of $158,000,000. This is one of your major exports, but it exceeded Canada's expenditure on liquor only by two million dollars! In 1935 Canada's totnl output oi’ gold, nickel and copper equalled $158,000,000. If we put all this niin- ernl output into the sea, and saved the money spent on liquor we would be only two million dollars out of pocket! This wastage must react throughout all departments pt business. It is difficult to compute the spread of indulgence in liquor in any strata of society. but it. is pos- aible to estimate 1h qpred I3- prornixately within the prison pop- ulation. In 1926 there were in our prisons 17.000 for indictable offences. of which number there were 10,030 prisoners for offences connected with liquor. In 1933, there were 33,000 prisoners for indictable of- fences, oi which number 29,000 prisoners were for offences con- nected ivitiuliquor. In nine years there was an increase oi 100% for indictable offences, but there was an increase or 184’; for causes connected with liquor. We have DZISSOCI through n dis- couraging perioci with smashing de- feats along legislative lines. The depression not only lessened the financial resources of temperance workers, but. also brought serious political entanglements. The churches have been affect- ed by these political entanglements and this has confused the tem- perance activity of the churches. In the recent local option con- tests. the dry forces have won 51 out oi '73. If there had not been the handi- cap of the 60 per cent. vote the dry: would have 54 victories. In 52 places ivlieTrcfllolcilll option was in force local optioiriias been sustained in 45, In tiplaccs having government stores, tho dry forces won. In 5 places the drys had a minority. There were i0 majorities for the tirys over the filly per cent. but less than the 6W7. In the iotiil vote we had 559’? of the vole. 'l‘liis shows the trend of the mind of the people. There have been nine court coves. Onc contest, won hv .1 majority vote was lest ilirsueli ii technical- ity. Seven out of eight or. won by the drYs and the my. l was won on wpeiil. The wiiliiiriiiizil of the app“! to the Privy Council on the legality of the Canada Temperance Act is a virtual acknowledgment of the Supreme Court of Canada us otir supreme authority. STIBKING By D.
