The most vulnerable spots are unquestionably to be found on the great lines of commerce between Eng- land and her dependencies. A lecture on this subject by Capt. Colomb at the Royal United Service Institution aroused consider- able interest. The lecturer and his’ news- paper critics laid great stress upon the im- portance of the Canadian Pacific route. Capt. Colombjsuggested, among other things, that arsenals should be established in Western Canada and Australia; and that cruisers should be established at all the Colonial ports. The London Standard points out that the Canadian Pacific rovte to India, if longer, is a good deal safer than the Suez Canal route, and that it would be well to make use of it in titues of peace. In times of peace commerce has a tendency to _ travel by the cheapest and quickes+ routes. The Canadian Pacific is not the shortest ‘route to India, but practically the difference in cost of conveying freight by the two routes is not nearly in proportion to the difference between thei respective dis- tances. In ocean travel the question of speed practically depends very aad on cost. The higher rates of speed can only be obtained by an enormously dispropor- tionate consumption of coal. It is practi- impossible for a steamer to carry enough coal to complete the voyage from England to India without replenishing en The cost of coal at the cosling stations on the voyage is very high, and con- sequently even the Peninsular and Oriental steamers have to reduce their rate of speed In the Canadian Handbook, prepared for the Goy- ernment by Mr. Geo, Johnson for distribu- ton at the Indian and Colonial Exhibition, | the advantages of the Canadian route in the matter of coaling stations are well pointed ‘out, England, Nova Scotia, British Colum- bia and Australia are the cheapest places ‘in the world for steamers to coal. At these ' places the steamers may take in their coal ‘almost at the pit’s mouth. i stations on the Suez route have to get their | coal from England or Australia at a heavy cost, A coaling station on the Pacific route could be supplied much cheaper than Aden or Colombo. At any rate the lion’s share of the trade from Japan, China and Australia is assured to the Canadian Pacific, and it is not too early for us to take into serious considera- tion the question cf defending this line It would be ‘folly to depend entirely upon Woolwich Ar- senal for war material. The isolation or even the capture of Woolwich is not such a remote contingency that the guardians of; one of the world’s principal avenues of corn- merce can afiord to ignore it. Anyhow, Woolwich is too far away from the Pacific. The awkward question of cost will of course arise, and there is likely to be some differ- eno of. opinion a% to what proportion of the The coaling | Mr. ¢ | now expense should be borne ‘by the colonies ; but sooner or later the question will have to be faced. As the Duke of Cambridge happily expressed it, ‘‘it is realy a question of insurance.” As a question of insurance it is the way to regard it. The premiums must be paid by the people, whose risks are covered. England has a considerable interest in the establishment of arsenals to fall back upon in case of a disaster at Woolwich.— Montreal Family Herald. A ee Boston Markets. Boston, June 26. PotatoEs—Old Potatoes are selling most ly at 65 tu 70c. at the roads, and 45 to 50c. at wharves. New Potatoes are higher, with sales at $2.25 to 83, as to quality. Fisu—The market has ruled quiet, and | all kinds of Fish except Mackerel remain at low prices. No Mackerel of any conse- quence have been landed frum the fieet the past week, and the supplies on market come almost wholly from the Provinces. The steamer on Monday brought 450 bris. from Port Hawkesbury, © . B., which were sold at $6.75 per bri. by the lot. About 135 brls. from Yarmouth, N, 8., also arriyed and sold mostly at $6.50. A trip of Cape Shore reported sold at Gloucester at $6,25 per bal. The range for new Mackerel is from $6 to $6.75 per bri. as to quality. No advance can be obtained for old Mackerel. Dealers continue to run their stocks as low as possible, and are very cautious about buying round lots. Some inferior Shore No. 2 cannot be sold at over $4.50, but $5 to $5.50 per bbl. is the regular rate when the Fish are wanted.
