Mr. William Cairns. of bower Freetown who. was guest speaker. gave the members a comprehensive and interesting account of his ex- perience and observations while touring the United Kingdom and European countries for six months under the Nufiield Scholarship hr: had been awarded. Mr. Cairns. who represented the Maritime Provinces, Quebec and Ontario in the scholarship award. was particularly impressed wzth the extent to which farming had been mechanized in Britain. and the foreknowledge of prices on all agricultural products. before plant- ing. as supplied by the government. "The system of subsidies to farn1~ ers during the war and post \\';ir years has been extended to a marked degree," the speaker said. “and prices are guaranteed well in advance." Farm Improvements Farm improvements were care- fully scrutinized and when approv- ed the cosi of such improvements was borne by the Government up to as much as fifty percent. with three years leeway for the farmer to pay the balance out of income. Agricultural Tribunals in many towns throughout the country see to it that farmers and land-owners high productive level. Undes this arrangement. production has been increased by more than fifty P“ cent andnhe only reason accepted for a disturbance of this balance is failure of the farmer to produce. Mr. Calms reports many of the leading farmers as being highly educated and equally successful financially. "The National Farmers Union with offices in every town in Eng- land. Scotland and Wales, and headquarters in London keeps agriculture on a high level of ef- ficiency and also accounts for an enviable l a b o u r arrangement whereby farm labourers are on a 16 hour week. “The government is footing the bill for a tremendous reclamation program under which grassland of great value is being developed.“ M: l Cairns said. 1 l Modern Methods "Power and paved roads," havei been a prime factor in improving- condltlons on British farms." the‘ speaker said. “From what I have, seen there my conviction is that ‘N? . in Canada are a long way from‘ top production." 4 Poultry are fed and watered‘ electricaly and are raised in con-1 finement, while overhead storage of feed in cattle barns is never' seen, it being considered advisable; to let in fresh air and sunlight lni these areas. Silos are never built upright. hay is usually bailed and the potato yield is about the same. as on the Island, were other in-l toresting facts brought out by Mr.‘ Cairns.
