A few weeks ago one George Blake- iu in of Derby, Conn., still a hale 'ind hearty man, celebrated his hun- dredth bir hday, and when asked how he had retained health and vigor so long, replied, “I’ve just lived natural like as God intended man shouldlive." He added that up to the time he was ninety two years of age he was at his oilice every morning at half past six o’clock and stayed there all day' He lived s. very abstifmious life, never using tea or coffee, lfquor, tobacco or other stimulam. He likes fun and sociability, seldom let the chance of a good time go by, married at 22 and when he lost his wife at 79 married again at eight-y to °‘ a good sensible and kindly little woman of 30.” He possessed a compatence, and took life cheerfully. We sometimes read of a man in our own country who has attained the age of one hundred years, in fact such instances of longevity are com- paratively friquont. To many that are born into the world the attainment of great age is almost apnysical impossibility. How long we shall live, humanly speaking will depend mainly upon two things-_-the endowed at the 'nnin of life and from inherited weakness or predis- position to certain fatal maladies and many destroy their chances of long life by vicious indulgence. The vir- tuous and temperate have the better chances of attaining long life and in disputably the better prospects of a serene andliappy old age. “rust out” for want of useful daily occupation it is no doubt true that many lives are worn out before their time by unceasing p toil and care. The true philanthropist will not be so much concerned that his fellows shall live to be an hundred years of age as that they shall live as health- fully and happily as they may during the “appointed time” which their constitutional equipment adapts them to stay in this life. _The ideal state would be one in which neither over-work nor idleness, care nor vice should wear out, rust out,or enfeeble all the people in the community.
