VAST STOCK Followinl is the text of the rectorial address given by the Very ,Rev. E. V. Maclienzie, D.D., at the closing exercises yesterday of St. Dunstan's University: "On behalf of the faculty and graduates I wish to extend a very hearty welcome to the distinguish- ed guests who have honored us on this occasion: to the parents and relatives of the graduates; and to the many friends who have as- sembled to witness this very im- portant event in the lives of the graduating class. "While the ceremonies and ad- dresses of this afternoon are of the utmost significance. neverthe- less. for us who have been present for many such events at St. Dun- stan's, and. no doubt, for many of you likewise, the exercises of the day are somewhat shadowed by our overwhelming happiness in being able to assemble for the first time with some share of comfort in our new auditorium. We can hardly say that it is a dream now realized. for it lay so far outside the realm of probabil- ity that we dared not even dream or it. It is, rather. the wildest of hopes suddenly brought into be- mg. "After completing the large unit of Chapel and dining room and installing central heating, we thought we would have at least a year to consolidate our gains. so to speak, and finish up many odds and ends left incomplete in the rush of construction. But our Alumni Association were impor- tunate. and insisted on the imme- diate undertaking or this building. "It. was a challenge not lightly to be thrust aside. It proved to be a very fortunate challenge; be- cause. had the construction not been started when it was, many years might have elapsed before it would be undertaken, on account of the tightening up of building materials which has since taken place. I would like to pay tribute here to our architect, Mr. Harris, whose patient good nature re- sponded to our pressing demands, which often must have been an- noying. An Excellent Job "This is not an elaborate build- ing; we held down the spccififica- tions to a minimum cost. and within that limit the contractors, M. F. Schurman Company. have done an excellent job. as they did in the building of the unit last year. We are very proud of the building as it is, and our highest praise and sincere thanks go out to the Alumni Association for their interest, zeal. and sacrifice in un- dertaking to pay for this structure. "It will keep them busy for sev- eral years yet. but if succeeding executives are as energetic as the present one they will succeed. The present executive under the chair- manship of Mr. Picton R. MacCor- mac and served ably by the sec- retary. Father Roche, have accom- plished great things in a short time. and we hope their efforts will be further rewarded. "Of course, we are in debt: we announced that fate in prospect last year. I am speaking now of our building operations apart from this gymnasium: this, as I have- On Sale From Today till Wed. If, however, the total subscription of the 1945 drive had been paid.we would not be in debt only 676:. or the subscribed am- ount was paid. "We were fortunate in receiving some other donations and be- quests. so that the debt on the building operations to date, ex- cluding this gymnasium is (I09.- 000.00; and that meme 34,000.00 a year interest. Notwithstanding that debt we feel sure the many con- tributors ito the campaign of 1915 are well satisfied with the use made of their contributions. Completed Works "As a result the following com- pleted works give evidence to their generosity: Memorial Hall-pro- viding residence for 80 men, six faculty members and temporary space for the library; a new dining room. chapel, kitchen and convent. a boiler room and laundry, and a complete central heating system. We purpose on the first Sunday of July to invite all those contribut- ors who so desire, to como and see for themselves what has been ef- fected through their donations. and we hope many of them will be able to come and visit us on that day of open house. Year's Enrollment "Our enrollment, 291 this year. was slightly lower than that of last year. As I remarked once be- fore here our enrollment follows very closely the economic status of the Province. A very marked drop in the number registered in high school years was experienced last fall. The depression years, when the birth rate was low, may be a contributing cause. The number registered in college years contin- ues to rise slightly, "or course the mounting cost of everything is a difficult hurdle for young people desiring an educa- tion. But if we could curb some of our extravagant habits. the burden would be lighter. I am sure that some students spend as much in luxuries. such as cigar- ettes, sweets. taxis and shows. as the cost of their board and tuit- ion. And they won't "learn a les- son from the immigrants who come to this country and in a few years have a sizeable amount saved through frugal and careful living. Our young people. fired by the spirit of a spendthrift age. only scorn them for it.. ”I suppose we shall close our eyes to this menace as we do to many another greater one. We have become so inured to dangers! The impending threat of Com- munlsm causes hardly a blink of an eye. The necessity of religion in education is admitted; but who attempts to provide it walks alone. The dearth of humanities in edu- cational curricula spells bankrupt.- c.v for our civilization--what of it? The concentration of wealth 'is dynamite for our social order: and we all put our heads in the sand. hoping for the danger to pass. 'rruly these are interesting times. Grad uatlng Class "Our graduating class is again large for the size of our College: 29 Bachelor of Arts: 10 Bachelor of Science and 5 Bachelor of Com- merce. This is the first class to graduate in Commerce, and we trust the course provided for them will prove a useful asset. The graduates are not of equal talent. nor of equal character develop- ment. We expect some to succed very well in life. and some not so well. but we bespeak for them the average share of success. "Woodrow Wilson once said. 'You can't turn a boy into a man in four years. That means that the educative process must con- tinue. no matter what occupation one selects now. Another educa- tionist made the suggestion that a college should be rated on the ad- Vance in learning its graduates made every five years after grad- uation. That places a continuing 'S' FURNISHINGS ' SHIRTS t FOR THE A HOLIDAY WHITES-Odd sizes up io 17 . Values to 53.95- 1.98 SPORT-All sizes-ossorled colors. In Floor in Floor T-SHIRTS All sizes.
