Raphael Semmes, the famous Confeder- ate Captain who, in the ‘‘Sumter” and **Alabama,”’ did so much in Maryland, Sept. 27, 1809, and had nears ly completed his sixty-eighth year. He entered the United States service as mids shipman in 1826, saw service in Mexico then studied law, and at the outbreak of the rebellion took charge of the “ Sumter,” or three years he roamed the seas, doing immeuse damage to the marine of the United States, but at last Capt. Winslow, in the ‘‘ Kearsage,” sunk his vessel oft the coast of France.
