He looks well after his long journey. Mr. Henderson went on a business trip and with no intention ot staying. He says Dawson City is n the most over-rated ard; wickedest place on the face of the earth. Gim- bling deus are in full blast during the whole 24 hours. There are four or six tables in a room Two men have charge of each table, 12 hours each, aud each receives $20 per day. Dancing houses are open from 7 p m to 6 a m. Their inmates number 200 girls who dance most of the night. refreshing themselves by from 20 to 40 drinks of beer or bad whiskey. The bartenders allow the girls a rebate ot 25 cents a drink. which they collect in the morning. Their gentlemen friends receive no rebate on the drinks. ' Mr Henderson. accompanied by his two hired men; Dol!_1\_l_(l .Mcliinuou and John Colgan, both cf whom returned with him.left Vancouver by steamer and arrived at Skagway, 1,000 miles distant on the 22;\d`of March. They took with them 30 head of cattle and succeeded in landing 28 safe and sound at Dawson City. They packed cn the trail until the 28th of April when they reached Ben- nett irom there. They drove their cattle to the \\`bite Horse Rapids, reaching there cn May 11th, after a hard trip, often being wet to the neck. having to swim their cattle at times and wcrk them along as best they czuid. They then packed their onttit for 10 days, when they drove their cattle to the foot oi Hootalinqua over the moun- tains. They reached Hoatalinqua on May 26th, built a raft and stared for Dawson which they reached on June 26th, n dslance of 1650 miles from Vancouver. They remained at Dawson 10 days and took steamer Marwin, on July 5th for Seattle 4,500 miles distant. then passed through Washington state, Montana, \\'iscon=in,to Ch cigo thence to Toronto and Montreal. From Tor. onto to Montreal was the most beautiiul country they saw. When Mr Henderson reached Daw- dozcn, when lie left, at S2; mea a gallon, light boots $15 to S20 a pair, rattle sold from $800 to S1000 each. Outfittiug .nateii-il and coarse clothing were almost unsalczble. The place is becoming rotten with scurvy and no wonder. But there is nc I keeping about it there Mr. Henderson took a walk nearly I every evening to see this cooking going on. He never saw so many cripples in h’s lite,-men walking abonton crutches and dying from scurvy. ‘ The' hospitals . are over crowded: One or two die on 1 every steamer coming out. The steamer Alice, which left Dawson on July 7th., and overtook thc' Marwin at Dutch Har- _ bor reported 17 funerals at Dawson on` the 6th. ~ The Americans estimate that $25 will be lost for every dollar taken out ofthe country and that a man will be lost for every 8l5.But a sale' estimate is $10 loss for- every dollar realised and a man`s death for every $125. Mr Henderson ridicules the' idea cf any man, especially any poor man, going to Dawsonmo make money in mining. There are only 45 paying claims in the whole section and there are 15,000 men camped along the banks _ot the river. _ There is no.. 'work to"“do."` Thousands ` would be glad to work for their board. Claims are a drug on the market and are auctioned off. every day at the Exchange at _ from $15 to S100 each. But , it a nun wants to stake cff a new claim I he must walk at least 50 miles through a swamp, carrying a heavy outfit. ln fact the tramp is almost impossible and grim failure the inevitable result. Tecra is no: one claim in 2000 that is expected to pay. The climate from April to July is beautiful. He saw most ofthe Island boys. They parted going out on Porcupine . Hill, 12 miles from Skagway, "with McRae, Small, Woriman, Kennedy, Dixon and Dawson, but saw them occasionally during the remainder of the route. _ Small. Kennedy, “'0r`:man and Mc- Rae looked arouni|Dawson_ and seeing its condition polled their 'boat about 40 miles up Stewart River prospecting. Mr |Henderso:i was talk’ng to them attey ’this but it was after night and ther were on opposite sides of the river. The current was too strong for any one to cross. I Dixon and Dawson are running » a 'hardware and general goods store in Dawson, The-v have a tent 14 x 22 son eggs were sellng at S18 perforwhich they pay $250 rent every month, Brent is the same big noble, hearted fellow there as here. He in- tended leaving next day, after . Mr Henderson last saw, him on a 40 mile tramp with a pack on his back to see a mine which he thought of buying, They had a former bank cashier cooking ior them for his bo ard. Stewart and Farquharson took the Wrangle route which isa very bad one. Reid. Moore, McFarlane and Trow- sdals were all in Dawson City and in good health, Mr Henderson only saw Reid, he did not see Gordon Dawson or A T|Wright after he left Vancouver, but they were both well. Mr Henderson packed his {train with a good staunch Islander, Henry Lawson _ of Covehead, and formerly a teacher at lNorth River. Henry went to P. W. C. I in the term 1886-87. All the Island boys, he says, will be home this fall and those who are home now had better remain here. There are no fortunes in Dawson for P. E. Is- land prcspectors. Mr Henderson speaks in forcible language of the mosquitoes. which, he y says, are well described in a Vancouver paper which he left us. This descrip- i ticn will appear tomorrow. There were bundles of poems and thousands of newspaper clippings. There were requests for auto- graphs, ior coat buttons, can ribbons or alm any kind of souvenir that the comidore might care to give. These were pieces of music dedicated to the commodore, advertisments with his picture in them, letters from societies named after him, and finally an en- grossed set of resolutions from his ua- _tive town in Maryland.
