CHARLO'I'l'ETOWN & Montague To Replace Small Street At e special meeting of the Mon- tague Town Council last night it was decided that all culverts un- der size on the main streets would be removed so as to permit a bet- ter flow of water during the time of heavy rainfall or seasonal floods. This move came as a fol- low-up of the recent heavy rain which caused so much damage to the streets of the town. It was pointed out that because of the small culverts, the rushing water had been diverted to flow down the middle of the road washing out the traffic route into deep gullles. It was proposed that the present culverts would have to be replaced by larger ones about 12 inches in diameter. The meeting was presided over by His Worship. Mayor B.H. Yeo. Councillors present included Messrs. Reynolds, Nicholson and MacLeod. It was moved and seconded that Mr. John White be appointed to act as a policeman officially in conjunction with police chief, Mr. Charles Macfsennan. Discuss Fire Equipment Considerable discussion took place regarding the fire equipment, and it was decided that the Fire Mar- shal would inspect the equipment regularly to see that all was in readiness for any contingency. The Marshal pointed out that it was difficult at. times to get the vol- unteer fire brigade to attend meet- ings, and he expressed the hope that at the next meeting there would be a larger attendance. The Council instructed him to report back concerning the next meet- ing. It was also proposed that the daughters Jean and Joan who ma brigade hold several practice have been the guests of Mrs sessions so as to become familiar Burke's brother and sister. Mr with the equipment, 0 and M75. Nb?" The Council gave him power to proceed with this project. Councillor MacLcod stated that the streets were in very bad con- dition owing to the daniage front the recent heavy rain. He said that the maintenance man would re- quire additional assistance to get the :.trocts in proper condition within a short period. The Council was informed that the culvert in His ,iiont of the skating ring was block-. 'cd and some construction work iwi-is necessary to put it back in lconditlon so that the water from the north part. of the town would have a clear flow through the. drains. Mayor Yeo stated that in vicwl of the recent hoist in electric rates granted to the Maritime Elcctricl Company -by the Public Utilities Board the cost of street. lighting in Montague would jump to sl-l000ll. Some discussioii took place re- grading the condition of the town dump, and it was pointed out that it would have to be closed and a new location determined. A loca- tion on the road leading to Kil- mulr was proposed. and it was felt that it man would have to be ap- pointed who would be on call to take the garbage to the dump This matter was not definitely decided. and was to received it more lengthy discussion at a later meeting. - 7...L.....L..
