Many reterred tothe dismissals of the Government offi- cials, admission being made that in many cases the services of the officials were dis- peosed with without investigation. Hon. Mr. Davies told Mr. MeCormack a> possible tothe rule not to appoint any lighthouse keeper over furty years old. Mr. MeDougail (Cape Breton) asked if tart! before April 13th, nomination day for the general election in Nova Scouia. Hon. Mr, Fielding repiied that it was not | in accordance with parliament auy prece- dent to mention the date ahead when the tirttf would be brought down. The Govern- men: weuldact witn due regard to the best interests of the Dominion. Hon. Mr. Fielding told Mr. Foster that the estimaies were nearly ready. The debate ou address was continued. Messrs. McLean, Wallace and Robert- eon, speaking as Couservatives, expressed the opinion that the Manitoba school question was dead and buried, and they did not want to see it resurrected. Mr. MecPhersov, Liberal member for Huron, declared himself as ctrongly opposed to prohibition. — _—_— SENATE OF CANADA. Senater Ferguson Scores the Government. Orrawa, Aprill.—Hon. Mr. Ferguson de livered an able speech yesterday afternoon in the Senate. He ridiculed the paltry ex- cuse given by the Government for retain- ing the principle of procection in its tariff bill, and scored the Government for mak - ing ‘the announcement concerning the coal duties to influence the election in Nova Scotia, and said that the Government 1s responsible for a most indecent action. Blockade of Greek Ports, Paris, April 1.—The report that ths Powers will blockade the poris of Greece almost immediately is confirmed. Sir Hibbert Speaks, Harirax, April 1.—-Sir C. H. Tupper will speak at a great Liberal Conservative raily to be held here tonight. — ~__—_~_ — Field-Marshal Wolseley evidently be- lieves inthe old adage about popular songs. + He has written a preface to “The Soldiers’ Song Book,” just published in London, which contains twenty-four fav— orite army ballads, selected by the regi- mental adjntants. Wolseley save that trocps “who sing ae they march will not cnly reach their destination more quickly and in better fighting condition than those that march in silence, Lut, inspired by the music and words of national songs, will feel that self-confidence which is the mother of victory. Montreal Gazette: ‘‘Perhaps more strik- ing even, in its way, than the taritf clause of the governor-general’s epeech is that relating to the Manito%a school settlemen’ It ix mildness exemplified. It does not suggest thatthe arrangement fecures for the minority what the constitution meant itto have. It is not hinted that it fulfils the pledges made by the members of the government when they were members of the opposition. It is merely declares that it was the best arrangement dbtainable under the existing conditions, It is not,, nerbaps, worth while remarking that exiet- ing cond. tions are the creations of the mino- isters who prepared the cpeech, and of their political triends, and of no one else in the broad Dominion. If there is a vrievance left rankling in the hearts of the Manitoba Catholic=, it is the work of Mersrs. Greenwav and Laurier, of Messrs. Sifton and McCarthy.” The Ottawa Journal, indenendent, giv s the ;osition of parties in the House or Commons as follows: Liberals, 120; Con- vacant seats, 5—213. ‘This gives the Liberals a mejority of 32 over all. Toe Toronto Glove supplies these figures: Liberals 119; Conservatives, 3; Indepen- dent Conservatives, 3, Patrons, 5; vacant, 5; Speaker 1.—Tota!, "213 3. The three Io. dependent Con-ervatives are Messrs. Mc- Carthy, Stubbs and Ross Robertson. The Patrons are Messrs. Tolmie, lLogers, Pettet, Graham and Donglass. The vacant seats are McDonald, Winnipeg, Colehe- a N.5S., Champlain and West Prince, P. E. J Ali were formerly beld bv Conservatives. The government has 47 majority, the Glove figures, if the independents and Patrons vote with it, and 31 if thev al vote against it. It is thought that on the franchise bill at least the ludependents and Patrons will vote with tne Liberal party. Summerside Journal: It js reported that Hon. Premier Peters will contest the riding of West Prince at the forthcoming bye- election, in the interest of the pre-ent Dominion Government. The idea is not by any means ap unlikely one. — i a ““UNCAS ” ARGWERED.- Sin,— Despite the adage that “he who pleads: his own case has. a fool fur his client,” “Hard Hart’ under the name ot “Uncas,” attempts hie own defence and gives what he is p'eased to call a “few facts in a long letter.” The facts are de- cidediy few. “Uncay’ " appears to be asso- ciating with company entirely unknown to the renpectab le residents of Annandale, and keeping a strict (?) soant of all ca-es of drunkenness (imported or otherwise) aud chargfug them against his pace of adoption. Itis ao iil-bird that fouls its own nest. *Cudgel” distinctly remembers the affair alluded to on the afternoon of the second last local election when a half dozen eled- tors having been rewarded by a too liberal supply of “fire water” at the poll (or barn) visiied the village and made some disturbt ance fora short time because they could no- obtain a further suppivy. That there was a free-for—all fight all the afternoon is not a fact. 'c is a falsehood and a Jibel on the fair name of the villagers. Let **Uncas’ cast his eve over the polls book and then give his readers a little further information on this subject, “Uncas” next rake? up a halt hour's jenocent epors indulged in by the young Jads and styles ita “limejuice row.’ This, to fay the Jeast, 1s cowardly. Neither the dead nor the absent can defend themselves. Nor was there liquor of any description made use of on the occasion. That one at least was **Unco fu” may be admitted; but this paragon of consittency might have told his readerstiat he arrived in the village late thatevening in that happy mood, and that no one “in the place was teaponsible for his condition, which «fie: all was not so serious as that into which “Uncas” has apparently fallen. As to the slur that any resident of the viliiage indulges in daily today.—it may bs that “Uncas” is “measuring other peoples corn with hia own half bushel” or that there is in “Uncas” superior judg. ment a vast difference between daily and nightly toddy.
