HEREDITY AND ENVIRONMENT.

to the. third and fourth generation. Ex-
perience has shown us that in physlgal
form. in mental capacity or weakI1€*SS, ill
disposition, temperament. and moral
qualities there is usually a strong resem-
the race: of men but through the entire
animal creat-ion. The tame law holds

the banana, the rose. the thorn and the
thistle are reproduced after their kind.
Two con‘ rast ingfamily histories were cit-
ed by a speaker at the recent international
educational ilmutirg at l-lulifiix which
serve to illustrate in an] almost st-artlirwt
way this law of heredity. One of these
was the notorious Jukes family, in which
from one vicious vagabond pair hiiS b€‘€I1
produced i:suc;e1si 
than 1,200 criminals whose offenceszrun
through the entire _range_ of v_ice__ an_d
crime,:dfunlienriess,pauperism,|prost_it.u-
tion, theft. burglary, arson, forgery, high-
.vay robbery and murder. As a mere
matter of money loss to the States infested
by this vile progeny of one evil pair, the
loss, the outlay for bringing them tolllsf'
ice, tbe charges for maintenance during
imprisonment must be reckoned in mil-
lions. The Jukes tribe have lived on the
earth a curse to themselves and to the
communities in which they lived.
As a contrast to this appalling record
the descendants of the famous Jonathan
Edwards to the number of 1,500 have been
|` traced, covering the like period of time in
the same section of the Republic. Here
instead of criminals we have worthy pat-
`riotic Christian citizens, including minis-
ters, college presidents and professors,
philanthropists, members of the learned
professions, and generally the class of men
and women who moved uponaliigh, in-
tellectual and moral plane themselves and
exercised an influence wide and strong to
enlighten  elevate those among whom'
they lived or are still living. -
_ We see at a glance that tremendously
potent forces for good were sent into the
world when Edwards was born, and that
most appalling forces for evil were set
loose under the law of heredity when the
original J ukes was launched upon the
world. But we must not be carried too
far by the facts of these striking
but largely exceptional cases. We derive
our dominant moral, mental and physical
qualities so far as they are inherited, not
merely from our fathers and mothers
alone, but partly from those that preced-
ed them. Just as every one born into the
world has a father and a mother he must
needs have had two grandfathers and two
grandmothers, twice as many great-grand
fathers and greatgrandmothers, and so
on in largely increasing numbers as the
family une is traced back into the distant
past. Many strains of blood, and a very
mixed ancestry have gone to make each
individual of the present time and neit-her
the Juke; nor the Edwards are true types
of the average man of to-day. The
average man or woman inherits
elements of both strength and weakness,
tendencies to vice and crime mixed with
qualities that tend to - true nobility.
And training and environment have
much to do with forming and directing
the man upon whom the mould of here-
dity has so clearly and indelibly left its
impress. “As the twig is bent the tree is
inclined." Of two acorns, each 'contain-
ing a like life germ and life purpose, one
under favorable conditions of soil, mois-
ture,sunlight and climate grows stalwart,
symmetrical and becomes the pride of the
forest. The other under opposite condi-
tions rernainsa miserable deformed shrub.
The contrast is the result of a natural

are so grounded in their natures that they
can never be eradicated. Those whose
constituent elements are more fortunately
compounded should be very considerate ‘
in regard to such others. For the law of
heredity islorced upon us, and no man is
accountable for what it inevitably entails.
As for our early environment, it is of
necessity also largely forced upon us at our
birth, for time and place of birth, and our
parentage are not matters of choice to
any. Ttereaf ter the vast responsibility of
parents and teachers begins, and how
great itis no man can estimate. Later
the free choice of the individual has
play, and he chooses for himself, but is
never wholly free from the influences of
heredity created before he was born, or
from`the influences of early environment
and training which he met in the forma-
tive stage of life and character, before he
became responsible for himself.

Dcclsre Alrshipsa Failure.
BERLIN, July 10.~The'comnient of the
experts in the German newspapers re-
garding the Zepplin airship is rather un-
favorable. Eye-witnesses point out that
it was inpossible for the airship, acting
under the most favorable winds and con-
ditions, to return to the starting point.
The experts noted the fact that even un-
der the favorable conditionsexisting when ;
the landing was affected the airship was
considerably damaged.
