I6-(Ar)-St. Louis Cardinals believe they have hit upon a plan that may produce that long-looked-for hard-hitting fi1i!t baseman. They are keeping stout Steve Bilko as far away from his mother-in-law's cooking as possible, To make sure there's no repetit- ion of last spring when Bilko re- ported for the Cards training camp 40 pounds overweight "because I just couldn't. resist my mot.her-ln- law's cooking." he was advised to play winter ball in Cuba. That's 2.000 miles away from Nanticoke. Pa., where Bilko began eating himself out of the majors last year. Bllko came up from Rochester .of the triple-A International League. He was the leagues runs-batted- in champion and had swatted 34 home runs. But the overweight bridegroom was soon back in Rio- chester. Now he comes back for another shot-pounds lighter. He also brings with him a .293 batting mark. Taking no chances of another Bilko bust. the Cards are bringing up three other rookie iirst-b:ss- men. Also from Rochester comes Don Bolweg, a left-hand hitter who alternated. with Bilko Ind who finished last season with the Cards, Bolweg batted .318 and drove in 60 runs. - The other aspirants are Ed Mich- elson ond Harvey zernla. Michelson hit .117 with Montgomery of the Class-B Boutheastom League in 82 games and zernia batted 318 at Omaha in the Class-A Western beanie. N. H.
