Europe must groan for two genera- tions under this immense burden. "Ami-leans keenly react the inter- pretation of U. S. as “Uncle shyloek." But this is a thoroughly snyloekian performance." The author however professes a great admiration for the idealism of tha Republic. when ‘led by Godfesring men; but alas. as Ah- raham Lincoln once said in time of stress, "we have forgotten God." When the voice of the politician is still and the great inarticulaie heart of the God-fearing multitudes of that nation illnds utterance, this usury will be swept aside, and it won’t take sixty years to do it. It is long since I read so enthral- llnz a book and I heartily recom- mend it to my readers, whether those who are addicted to lighter reading or those who wish for something to form the foundations for deeper study. I was recently much interested in Lt.-Col. McKlnnon's account of the conditions of Europe, and in partic- ular of Soviet Russia. The activities of this State are a threat to the rest of the world, but the "Freedom of the Seas" points out that they will be defeated at the coming Armsged. don, when the Prince of Rosh will be opposed by a united Anglo-Ssxom dom. _3_ 1.; .snails wsursns A lumpy 'ro it/ici: I-UNIINBURG. N. s.. much ze.-in an interview with Captain Angus Walters, managing director of the veteran champion fishing schooner Bluenose, as to the possibility of an international fishermcffs schooner race between the Bluenose and the schooner Gertrude L. Thebsud, launched at Essex, Mass., St. Patricks Ddy. appearing in the Halifax Chronicle, Captain Walters states that he understands the schooner just launched was built with s view to challenging the Bluenose for the international fishcrmen’s race trophy. Captain Walters considers that nine year old Bluenose is as well able to defend her title today as at any time and is quite willing to compete with the new schooner or any other schooner, providing the race is sailed off Nova Scotia and the necessary funds are forthcoming. Should these two main conditions be satisfactorily arranged. he sees no reasons why» other details cannot be agreeably worked out. The race would have to be set for the autumn. ns tha Bluenose, in command of his bwthrr. Captain John waiters. is now in company with the rest of the fishing fleet on the banks and is equipped for the entire season's fish- ing. There have been no Intematlonal races since 1923 when Bluenose, the defender. and Columbia. the challen- cer failed to finish the series off lllslifax, owing to a dispute over the |Bluenose leaving a navigation buoy to starboard instead of to port. In 1928 Bluenoss and Haligonisn, also of Lunenburg. held a series of races off Halifax, the champion winning ess- ily. There was another gap until last ' year. when three vessels of the Lunen- burl fleet, two of them fresh from the builders' yards, held a "sudden death" race off Lunenburg in con- nection with the Fisheries Exhibition, which was inaugurated there last Year. Bluenose did not compete, ar- riving home from the Banks just in time to see the finish of the contest. The suggestion has been made that if it could be arranged, the interna- tional race this year could be held oi! Lunenburg, the daies to coincide with the Lunenburg Exhibition, but this is Purely tentative. The intemationsl schooner races began at Halifax in 1020, when Cap- tain Marty Welch, the Dlgby-Glou- , oester skipper, came hero from Glou- cester in tha schooner lkperanto and defeated the Delewana. Next year, Captain Angus Walters, who had been master of the Gilbert B. Wal- ters in the Nova Scotia elimination race of 1920. finishing just behind the Dslewana, was given command of the Sluanose, designed by W. J. itcue. of Halifax. and built at Lunenburg to win back the cup. nperanto had been lost on Sable Island. so Capt. THEN AND NOW-A Holifax ex- change, roprinting the happenings oi twenty-five years ago, carries the following interesting it/em from its files of March 8, 1905: “Mr. E. W. McKinnon, operator in the I. C. R.. office, left here for a fortnlght's vis- it to his fonner home in P.vE. ls- lsnd, some six weeks ago and only succeeded in getting back here last evening. He had io walk the greater part of the way from Hunter River to Cape Traverse, cross with the ice boats for Tormehtlnc, and do n fur- ther stunt nn foot to suckville." Arl- other interesting item. dated March 7. 1905, reads. "The steamer "Mlnto" opened navigation between Prince Edward Island and the mainland in rather a curious way on Saturday. An ice barrier two miles in width, lying in the Gulf, has proved impen- ` etrsble, and the only thing to do was get over lt. Bo the "Mlnto" carrying teams, steamed out from Picton to` this side of the ice and the "Stan- ley" sailing from Georgetown an- chored nt the other aide and the teams were kept busy transferring freight all day between the steam- ers. Somebody rmarked that the two miles of ice was frozen straight to the bottom of the Gulf." Miss Mabel Parkman. student at Mount Allison Ladies College, re- turned home last week, having been called hero on account of the serious illness of her mother.
