It was not like a sunset; it was too somber, too terrible. The sea was dark, the horizon indistinguish- able. One human being seemed:so small, so helpless, so slight a part of allthe mys- tery and weirdness! It was as if the hand of Deity were visibly laid upon space and worlds, and had alloweda momentary glimpse into the awfulness of creation. It might have been hours —time seemed annihilated—and yet when the tiniest possible globule of sunlight, like a drop or a pinhole, ap- peared, that fair corona and all the color insky and cloud withdrew, the stormy twilight of entire naturalness returned, and then the two minutes and a half in memory seemed but a few seconds.—Miss Mabel Loomis Todd in the New York Even- ing Post. respect - Insects That Kat Cables. Prof. Bouvier, at the Paris Academy of Sciences. has been describing the destruction of a telegraphie cable by insects. The cable (a land one) was laid in Tonkin in 1894, and was com- posed of seven copper wires protected by an insulating envelope coated with cotton andjute. In addition to this, it was placed in a leaden pipe. Not- withstanding all these precautions, the cable, which was laid on a marshy soil, began to show signs of decay in 1895, and it was found necessary to re- On examining the cavities in the protecting envelope M. Bouvier discovered that they had been made by termites. Miine Edwards, com- menting on the professor’s address, said that it was not the first time that injury to metals by insects had been noted. During the Crimean war bul- lets were found to have been perforated by hymenoptera, which came from the deal boards of which the packing cases had been made. 7, iineatnsnantneninciaimpiaasuaasaaaaiiimasiet A Prominent Lawyer Says “I have eight children, every one in good health, not one of whom but has taken Scott’s Emulsion, in which my wife has boundless confidence.” T. He thought you might not know about it becanse the property bas never been surveyed since yor bought it.’’ ‘He has the impudence to assert that I bave been occupying six inches of his ground, has he?’’ “That is what he said.’’ ‘“*Who told him all this?’’ “He says he snspected it all along, and had it surveyed yesterday, and that the surveyor tole him.’’ ‘‘What is he going to do about it?’’ **He says he is going to have a man come next week and move the fence over.’’ ‘Tle is, is he? If it's necessary I'!1 hire a whole standing army and a Gatling gun to stand guard over every post in it. That’s what I’m going to do about it,’’ “She isa Simple Home-Body.” Sometimes one hears it sald of a good wife and mother that ‘‘she’s a regular home-body.’’ The phrase is simple, but what a world of ennobling qualities it in- dicates, and what a universe of frivolities it excludes. A matronly home-boily is, indeed, ‘‘Heaven's best gift to man,’’ and the husband capable of maltreating so true a helpmeet, is only fit for such companionship as Nebuchadnezzar found in the Babylonish pastures. Dashing ladies, whose mission it is too set the fashions, won't you leok in upon your gentler sister as she sitsin her well- ordered nursery making the children happy with her presence? Note how she adjusts their litule difliculties, and ad- monishes, encourages, instructs, amuses them, as the case may require. Do you think any nurse-maid could produce such harmony in that little circle? Is she not an enchantress? Verily, yes, and her charm is ‘“‘love stronger than death’’ for those sweet young faces where rou may see her smiles and frowns (though she seldom has occasion to frown) reflected in glee and sorrow, like sunlight and cloud-shadow in a quiet pool. The first discovery of these interesting relics of past times was made hy the captain of a merchant vessel, which had stopped st a port on the northeastern coast of Madagascar to trade with the natives. During the stay at the point mentioned, the curious vessels used by the natives for water vases attracted the attention of the captain. Upon investigation it was found that these odd utensils were in reality gigan- tic eggs cut in halves. Upon questioning the water carriers in regard to the bird that laid the eggs and the place where they were procured, the captain was given to understand that the bird itself was unknown, but that the eggs were discovered in a large sand bank some distance away in the up country, and could not be found elsewhere to the knowledge of the natives. An offer to purchase al] that could be procured soon resulted in the discovery of several fine specimens, all of which fell inte the hands of Isadore G. St. Hil aire, the French naturalist. These curi- osities were afterwards distributed among the largest museums. They pos- sess the ability to leave the nest as soon as hatched, and, by using all four legs, climb over hranches, twigs and tree trunks. This bird has also the power, even while young, to swim, dive and remain for a long period under water. Soon after hatching the four legs begin to change, tne claws fall off, and the claw like members begome flattened into the point of an ordinary bird wing; feathers begin to grow, and when fully grown no sign remains of the queer fore- legs it possessed at birth. The nestlings are the nearest approach toa quadruped found among existing birds. The adult bird is nearly as large as the peacock, and lives in the densest forests.
