Me 1 , ' i ANNUAL REPORT. ` Following is the annual report oi l the Directors submitted at the f an- nu meeting on Thursday evening 2-, 5:00 Directors in submitting their' Annual Report for the year 1912, congratulate the Shareholders on the* suctess of the Inter-Provincial Exhi-l bition held on their grounds last September. 1 Dixing the year the buildings on' the grounds were thoroughly gone, over and put in ilrst-class order and condition. We have to report a still iurther advance in the number and quality; of the Exhibits from the adjoining Counties. The Exhibitors therefrom winning a fare share ol the prizes oi- ieredl Beautiful weather was experienced throughout the whole Exhibition. There were two days good horse racing, and again marked improve- ment was shown in our Island horses. Last year your Board had annexed to their report a tabulated state- ment, showing the increase in ex- hibits ior the iour years irom and in- cluding lsos. We subnzdt herewith a somewhat, similar statement, showing the En-` tries and Prize winners ol last year as against those of 1911. These figures are instructive, be- cause the results of horse breeding, horse breeding here 7" :And he added, that our insularity would be our strength in that respect, ior our people would be known far and wide as the breeders oi high-class Clydes. The same might be said with equal truth oi Bhires. It is quite certain that our exhibit oi these Draft horses was highly cre- ditable to the Previnee..and mlsht well be the nucleus ol a lucrative and growing industry. No adverse criticisin can however be made in relation to the Cattle Exhibit. In it there has been mark- ed increase for the last eight years in number, and our Judges_ speak highly of the cattle individually, and of the care taken and knowledge shown by Exhibitors in preparation lor the Prize Ring; and it is no small gratiilcation to know that one oi our Exhibitors took the First prize at Amherst this year over all other com- petitors ior the beet 'milch cow. The exhibit oi Sheep and Swine is and always has been creditable- to the people oi our Province, and as the competition becomes keener, greater care is shown in individuality and preparation. ._ f Your Board have strlvsn to give a proper Exhibition oi Poultry, and have partly succeeded, but notqnite to their satisfaction. 4 So important an industry deserves every encouragement, and we pur- cattle raising and agricultural pur- suits generally must surely be shown in it general exhibition oi the pro- ducts oi 'the whole Province. We see that there is a distinct iall- ing od in the exhibition oi carriage horses, and the gentlemen experts who judge in our Horse Ring tell us, that even those exhibited are not re- premnegeiys 0| me Carriage h0rBe_;were but 662 Fruit Entries. Not- WhY this is so it is not for us to say, but it is apparent that a breed- in! industry which at one time in the history oi this Province was a most valuable one, is not developing as it should. The some remark may be made in relation to Saddle, Hackney horses an Roadsters. It is pleasurable to note, however, that there is a distinct improvement in Clydesdale, Shire, Draft and Gene- l-al Purpose horses. We think there is much in the re- mark ol one oi our Judges who said, "The Clydesdale bred in your Pro- vince has a just reputation. Would it not be, wisdom ,to contine the breeding oi Island Drsiters to that breed particularly, in view of the 4¢|ll‘ll>mf»¥- Of your specializing in *irons T 1 like Dr. Chase's to. rid the uric 'lnd so remove and rheuma- ,pose, by providing a better and more imodern description of copies, to ex- 'hibit these birds to much better ad- i vantage. V \ The decrease oi 314 in the number lol Entries in Fruit reduced the num- ber ol our total Entries lor the year `1Bi2. It was an od fruit year, but no more so than 1910, when there fwithstanding the reduced entries, the ,exhibition oi fruit last year was well ,worthy of the remark ol an expert ‘liorticulturist that possibly it _ was ‘the best in selection and quality that ,has ever appeared on our tables. ‘ There can be no doubt oi the possi- :bility of fruit growth, colouring and lilavoring in this Province oi such lapples as Alexandcrs, Wealthys, Gra- ivensteius and other kindred varieties. lwhen better means oi transportation lare oilered, fruit growing will be one Q oi out great industries. - I No special reierence need be made lto other exhibits at our Agricultural ;Fair. The exhibitors in Grains and ,‘Seeds,»Field roots and ~ Vegetables, iFl0wers, and in the Industrial and ‘Art Classes have always been highly creditable to our people, and every year shows an appreciable advance- ment in that knowledge which they must oi necessity have to secure the approval oi the expert judge. It is gratifying to see in this corn- psrisdn that the primes in all the Classes are more keenly contended lor, and consequently that there is a greater distribution oi the- ‘Prile I Money. Nowhere is this more shown ,than in the Poultry Classes, fliers although there _ were '21 audi ional entries, yet the number of prises won eiceeded .those ol 1911 » D117.. , For several years past your Direc- tors have been endeavouring to se- aviation our Until late l’7it ¥- 1` qi :nh ` I- |toh'l;’ _ ’ ._.~Ho01mv. is i.en.,0uevbeu f L Louis N.
