She knows whavs best; snd she’il get it. —Itis said that at the meeting of the Executive Counci! this forencon it was cecided to call the Legislature together on a dute yet to be fixed. — Mr. Pineau’s narre does not in the jist of Canadians appointed to Parie. Sureiy he hax not the victim of false preiences ! — The authorities are still of the opin- ion that the steamer Minto is unable to reach Charlottetown owing to the ice. They sent the Stanley instead, and she “can dou ii.” —It is stated that Mr.. Chamberlain is busy with a scheme giving ibe colonies representation in the British parliament in return for which they are to pay a proportion of the imperial army and navy expeuditure. —The Bvers admit that they took British territory “for etrategic purposes ;” and the Halifax Herald suggests that the British will do therame by the Boer re- publics; the strategy being for the permane ent defenceef British South Atrica. —It was reported this foreaoon that the Provinciel Government hai passed away Cnot peacefully) during last night. But enquiry to-day has elicited the statement that the patient still livee, thowgh oppara ently near the end. Naturally there is per- tubation in the Provincial Building. —The official statistics of the wheat crop at Victoria, Australia, show only 15,000,000 bushels, instead of 21,000,800 bushels which was the estimate before the harvest. ‘Lhe exportable surplus wil! be 6,250,000 bushels, instead of 12,000,000. — Judging by the reports, the whole em- pire followed Her Mejesty’s signal to do eapecial honor to the Irish nation because of the heroism ofthe Irish troups with General Buller’s column and those who took partion the defence of Ladysmith during the long siege. —In ans ver to a letter to Lady Tilley asking if she would kindly trace the Chrietmas boxes sent to the soldiers ic Seuth Africa, His Worsbip Mayor Warburton received a reply from Lady Tilley stating that the “ Donald Currie Company ” had advieed herof having sent them in owe of their ships to Cape Town. It is unfortuoate thet the St Joba boxes shared the same fate as ours. Tickets on sale for Emersonian recital Friday evening, March 30h at C. Dz. appear to go been made | what THE PATRIOT AND THE STANLEY, Sin,—The Patriot of yesterday is out with an ¢editerial condemning the Stanley, which, as usual, shows @ narrowness ef view and party animua which is, to say the least, unkind, ungrateful, and ignor- ant to a remarkable degree. To condemn the Stanley on the first trip of the year going out light, with little preparation for 1¢¢, and because the did pot make the trip over as quickly as the new beat Minte, which has been running all w'nter and also sticking in ice, requires more gall than we thought was possessed by a tritediter. In the tacecfithe ice break- img record that the Stanley holds this oply prover th old adage that “ Fools step 'n where angels fear to tread.” The Patriot is misleading when it saye the Stanley took almost five houra and a half te make the trip performed by the Miate im three houre. The Stanley, if reperted correetly, was at Pictou light at 1.20 awaiting the departure of the Minto frem Pietou to snable her to dock without fear of injury to either boat, and gailed under slow speed al] the way over. But why dwellon that point? The Stanley is well kuown, and her record is establish- ed by her past work. Any dirt~slinging againet her by parties who donot know they are talking about will only lessen the respect of public for their state- ments, ne matter what their political leamiogs may be. The poiat the public are interested in most—the point for which the Board of Trade pad eoentended all winter—was demenstrated by the officers in command’ of the Stanley, namely, that it was possible to bring the beat to Charlottetown instead of Georgetown ; and as it happened that the seuthwest wind ef the three days pre- vious hed operated to close this port more againtt @ steamer thao at anv other period || winter, still the firet trial of the Stanley everceme the difficulty and proves that the Stanley has now acrew that are able to ceme to her relief and get her out of ice that proves !00 beavy for her; a_ staff which enables her to deliver ber freight and ptseengere, Winslee farmere, mariners and other kiekera, at the port they ehip for, and net compel them: under similar circumstances to walk five miles ashore and hire teams to take them eight miles further to the nearest railway station. The ice jam which stopped the Minto could not, ia the nature of thirgs, have been any greater than that which the Stanley battled against and overcame’in Hillsborough Bay as it was represented to Sir Louia to be from four to ten feet thick. Taking this statement as correct which from the ex~ perience ot the source it emanated from must be accepted, 1 conclude that the Patriot should apologise to the Captain, engineers aad crew of the Stanley for the disgraceful attemptto destroy the reputa- tion of the fighting qualities of the Stanley and her men in heavy ice One Wao Kyowa.
