Minto, was somewhat ex- pected to arrive yesterday, and there was very general interest to see her on reaching port. It was known that .she sailed on Thursday the 16th from Dar -‘ dee for C clarlottetown direct, out in the interim there have been severrl strong westerly gales which would impede her progress. It would therefore not have been surprising had the Minto not made her appearance un- til today. When the _Princess came in irom Picton word was brought that thewlnt r steamer had been sighted andthe news spread rapidly through the town. A little after six o’cleck she made her ARRIVES Another Trans-Continent- l al Railway. MACKENZIE AND MANN With Prominent Politicians In the Arrangements- Charter Secured. Others great and small were coming, racing along the sidewalks, or speeding more swiftly on bicycles and in carriages. At 6.30 o’cloek the Minio glided gently across the outward end ofthe whart aad stopped in close touch with it. Scarcely had her motion stopped when she was boarded by the multitude who, without waiting tor the gang- plank , climbed over her rail and on the deck. Thence they quietly mide their way fore and aft inte the saloon and to every accessible part of the steamer. Capttln Finlayson, his oiiicers and crew were verv warmly greeted and are all apparently proud cf the Minto. In tie hurry ot making fast it was lelrned :na the oeriorfnt ce of the steamer on her first Atlantic voyage was allthat could be desired. No al- tempt was made to acniete a specially fl P ge. g _ - four days she encountered head winds age. Sunday the 17th was the stormiest dav. During the rough weather the steamer was boarded by a heavy sea and one of the deck houses stove in. During the latter part oi tae voyage the weather was good. She proved an excellent sea-boat however, and made an average ot about 13 knots -very good time-tab ing the voyage through. As is well known the Mlnto was built for strength rather than for great speed, and is de- signed especially fer conflict with the ice. During the voyage tha consu mption ci coal was from 23 to 24 tons daily. which shows good economy of fuel tor the speed attained. The uescriptiou published in THE GUAR- bI.AN had shown them in advance what /to expect. and apparently all expecta- tions were fully realised. In one respect the published description was inaccurate. The dining s. lcon will accommodate about 24 guests at a time instead oi the more limited number stated. This will be ample for a winter steamtr, which will seldom be required to carry a large number of passengers at one time. _ The warm welcome accorded tue Minto shows that her prospective value to the winter service ot the Is- land is realised, and the efforts of Sir Lcuis Davies and tue Government of which he is a member warmly appre- ciated. ‘ l uRrRlsr a pure hard S03P° ‘ A that \__ _ makgs 3, h3fdn¢SS» A hardness that wears well. 5 cents a cake.
