[n vain. Unless Maiame Gribeaa’s orge had de- vyoured her, she must have vanished into smoke as thin as her tale of woe. The investigations were dropped, and Monsieur Jacquard scored a heavy en- try te the account of prout and loas. Late in Saptember Madame Jacquard had occasion to visit Paris ina hurry and alone. Hastening intoa carriage at the railw ay depot, she Was tollowed by an elegantly dressed young man, who restored to her handker. chiet which she had dropped. The young man offered her further atten- tions, which she accepted. They drif- ted into conversation. Suddenly she noticed on his slender hand a ring of familiar aspect. It wasa cat's eye,the very duplic.te of one whieh had form- ed part of her vanished jewels. That is a curious ring you have mon- her sieur, she observed. ‘It isindeed. A valuable trifle, yet one 1 would not part with for the tressures of the Great Mogul. ‘Indeed! a family relic, I suppose r “A gift from a dead sister. And the voung man shed a silent tear. Madame Jacquard tore a leaf from her notebook and wrote on it ‘ cali an ofacer. When the guard passed she slipped it into his hand, The young man, absorbed in mournful reverie, failed ito notice the act. It was not until he was assisting Madame Jac- quard out of the car, and recompensing himself for the trouble by picking her pocket, that he beeame aware of the fact that an inscrutable monument of iustice stood beside him. The young mai prove to be an Knglish pick- pocket, who had been compelled to leave London between days, and who had been living in such model retire- ment in Paris that the pelice had not yet got on his track. He was as obsti- nately silent in regard to himself as a sphynx. The cat’s eye ring proved really to be Madame Jacquard’s, but the mystery of his possession of it and of his connexion with Madame Gribeau remained unexplained. He had no ac- quaintanees, and his lodging could not be traced, Richmond Carter, as he called him- self, was tried and sentenced: Some days later te porteress $f a house in the Rue Delacour applied }to the pglice to investiga‘e the strange absence of one of her lodgers. A young lady, who seemed to bean actress, had rented an apartment from her, sent her two large trunks in, and after having remained some months, oc susionally Visited by t young man of elegant aspect, had van- ished. Two long incisions were made around the tumor, and the investing membrane was removed. The tumor was seized with a pair of forceps, and while so held was completely separated from its at tachments. Both the carotid arteries and the jugular veins were cut. The bleed- ing was tremendous. To his horror the operator now found the tumor too large to be removed. Nothing daunted, he pro- ceeded to cut freely from both angles ef the mouth backwards to the rami of the jaws. Both rami were then sawed off. Then, by applying a pair of bull-dog forceps to the tumor, he was able to remove it. The operation lasted three hours. Besides the carotids and jugulars, sixteen other ves- sels were cut and tied.” When the epera- tion was nearly finished, the student's mas- ter came in. He attempted no inte: f rence, When the student had finished, he looked around; theireyes met. Neither spoke. The master seized his pupil’s hands, and, the tear which glistened in his eyes bespoke his jey and his pride. When all was through, the patient was, to all appearance, dead ; she was carried to her room. After lying to all appearance dead for three weeks, it was discovered by the aid of a magnifying glass that she breathed very faintly. When at the end of three months she was able to articulate very feebly, she, in pouring forth her thanks to her benefactor, spoke very feelingly of the relief which she ex- perienced in having her nose relieved from its cruel tormentor. Mr. Galen, we think, deserves great eredit for his ingenious operation, and will, no doubt, take a high place among the surgeons of the day. Yours truly, M. Jan. 15, 1880.
