Mr. Foster’s Able Expose of the Grit Tariff Policy. ~~ -—_-—— Sr. Jonyx, March 12. The Liberal-Conservatives had a grand rally laet evening at the Mechanics Insti- tute. Many people were turned away for lack of room. The speakers were Messrs. Hazen and Chesley, and Hon. Messrs. | Costigan aud Foster, in the order named, Hon. Mr. Foster’s address was a calm dis- cussion of the tariff policy of the opposi- tion. He read a great number of declara- tions of the Laurier-Cartwright faction, showing their programme down to free trade without a vestige of protection. Then he showed the results of this policy. First, thirteen million dollars of direct tax- ation; secondly, the loss of a home market for manufacturers; third, the loss of a city market in Canada for farmers; and lastly, the utter absence of the advantage of gain- inga market inasingle country in the globe for a single Canadian product.
