The struggle between the great steel
trust on the one hand and organized labor
on the other has served to bring into re-
lief the fact that the billion dollar trust
possesses a great but invidions power
which it has yet in reserve. For instance
_it can close any one ormore of its great
industrial plants, and carry on its business
of supplying the market without incon-
venience from the closing. It make
the closure permanent, and might even
find it to its interest to do so, concentrat~
ing its work at the more advantageous
centres, and perhaps dismantling tho
works which were found least profitable
to operate.
Around one of these great industries it
may be that a city has grown up through
a period of years and tens of thousands of
work-people and their dependants have
established their homes there. Such
plants constitute in many cases the main
support of the town. ' We have all read of
the wide-spread sudering among em-
ployees, their wives and families and
,among merchants who catered to their
wants when a prolonged strike has oc-
ourred in the past. Before the “trust”
era was ushered in the plants were owned
H _ individually, and when a strike was over

business was resumed at the old stand

possesses this power. It is quite clear
that it may be to its interest to exercise
the power which it possesses in that re-'
gard. And it- will be dimcult to find any
adequate remedy for the blow when it
falls. l\’ew.industries upon avast. sealed
cannot be called up in a day, even where
capital stands ready for the venture. But
capital will be timid of entering upon
competition with a trust whose means are
fabulous. A very F-little reilection will
show how hopeless, in face of these con- _
ditions would be the case of the workers.
The fact is that one of the great trusts
has the power to bring about widespread
ers. but to entire towns and cities. The
Trust is conscious of its power. It will \
be guided by selfish interests and those
may-and sometimes must prompt the
management to the exercise of that power

Sir’Louis Davies will be warmly wel-
comed by everybody now that he has

services to the Island entitle him to the
highest consideration. This will be pro-
bably his last visit as a member of the
federal Cabinet, as it is understood he is
shortly to retire from political life to take
a position in the more serene atmosphere
