Pain of the Wound Felt In s Lost \ Hand. `A _‘British soldier writes: Most people, I think. know that when ri person has lost a limb that person still retains the "sense" or peeling of the missing limb. As a case in point. I might men-tion that a friend of mi-ne \vho had lost a, leg ‘in the war, in uri unthinking moment took a step on the missing leg and came to grief. I myself had the rnisfortirne to lose my left hand on the Messlnes ridge la-st June. and all the pain I have suffered lom the wound has been in the hand which I no longer possess. Now the peculiar punt of it rill is that on -alter- nate days the f-ingcrs oi the missing hand open and close; that is to say, yesterday -they were closed; to-day they are open. To-morrow they will lm closed again Curr this be explain- ed? this change takes .place dirring sleep, und mice or twice, on restless nights, I have actually felt the change -taking place. I was left-Iiarrded. and during the attack I carried my revolv- cr in the missing lrzund. When the lingers are closed they are exactly in the some position as if they were still grasping the revolver, Tha-t I can understand, but why should they open on alternate days? Tire only ~xplana-I-ion I can offer is, that what remain-s of .thc ihand alter I was wounded was u.mprr-tated exactly twenty-four hours later. Also, I was wounded fsomewh-ere about 4 'o'elock in ,-the morning and was operated on agbdut .the same time the following morning, and the opening and closing of the fingers -takes place about this timo- -PREM|ER'8 LOST DOG Mr. Lioyd George‘s long-lost and :nuclr-advertised-for dog, the Welsh terrier “Cyniore," has come Ironic again. _ , It‘was on Friday, July 19, that the 'I-ittle fellow Iosft himself vin a. crowd in I-Iigh street. We 'have every confidence that not only will a generous response be forth- coming, notwithstanding the number of calls upon our citizens, but that they will make a contribution Worthy of the appeal and commensurate with the great need of urgent financial assistance to provide for the relief of our sailors and their dependents, as well as for the maintenance of Institutes, Orphanages, etc., caring for these magnificent and fearless heroes, who have kept our shores free from invasion, maintained the freedom of the seas for the Allied Nations and transported our products and our troops to the field 'of battle without the loss of a single life. While Canada has no dreadnoughts or cruisers, her shores during the past four years have been protected by the British Navy at the expense of the British Tax Payer, although New Zealand and Australia have borne their share as well as the smallest atom of the Empire the Malay States which have contributed a battleship. At the If-resent time we cannot take thayt work upon e our shoulders, but we can undertake to care for the wounded and disabled sailors and to alleviate the sorrow of the window and the sufferings of the orphans of those whose blood stained the decks, or who have sunk beneath , the waves. ing purposes :-- _ Treasurer- _ 1'* f ‘-' ~'»~.- \"‘:» v" ' “ To the Sailors of the Mercantile Marine \ve owc the material prosperity we enjoy in Canada today, for- they have carried our food products and mim- itions to the Allies. These men have faced every daarger of mine and tide, wind and submarine, 'in order that the Empire’s commerce might not stay its course and that the Empire’s troops might pass upon their way. If, in the performance of duty a ship goes down and those sailors escape, the next you hear of them is that they are again on another ship. They do not forget that up- on them and their comrades depend the safety and trade of the Empire, and whether the Empire lives or dies depends on whether or not we are all pow- erful at sea. If they are blown up or drowned, that is part of the risk chccr- fully taken. But what of their widows and orphans? Now what are we going to do for the wounded and disabled sailors of both services; the widows and orphans of those seamen who have paid the supreme sacrifice, as well as for the Naval and Merchant Sailors, prisoners of War in Germany? As true Canadians, we cannot ignore the responsibility that is upon us and the potency of the appeal which says that men die or suf- fer for our welfare; we cannot do less than honor their memory by helping to care for their loved ones. _ Our sailors have always been ready to do their duty; ict us be ready to respond to their appeal; to shoulder our share of the discomfort and priva - tions entailed by this -War and let nobody adopt the attitude of thinking that they, hemselves, ought not to be affected by it. Let your contribution be a generous one in memory of those who sleep in the depths of the ocean and whose requiescant is sung by its ceaseless waves and in thankfulness to those who, through their faithfulness and heroism of duty in our behalf will suffer until the end of this titanic struggle.
