Yes, this is Autumn, and truly she has
brought n rich reward to honest toll.
Upon the farmers ofthls favore<i"Provin_cc
she has bestowed a bounteaus harvest.
The vivid stories of succeas in the far
away \Vest may cause some oi us to dir-
regard the riches at our ieet. but the ex-
perience of many years has préven that in
this Province we may depend upon a suc-
cessful harvesting. We need not. dread
that anuntlmely blizzard may sweepdown
our ripeuerl grain. and leave in-ruin the
result ot all our labor. This is a Province
that is dependable,
Our Hsherles have b.en very successful,
Lobslers lu particular have formed a
source of great profit. The iishing indus~
try is becoming more important yearly,
and its various branches will employ and
enrich many of our people.
In our orchards the magic of the fall has
transformed the blossoms into rlpened
fruit. This was aa offyenr for nearly all
kinds of iruit; though in some sections
trees have borne generously.
The grain and roots crops are both gt
more than ordinary rulue, end our farm-
ers arc in even a better financial position
than usual. Cheese, of which a great deal
has been manufactured has maintained a
high price all summer and is now soaring
above tnc twelve cent mark.
\\’lth it-ace and plenty within our
bounds our population has one only
source of discontent, and that is the tact
that another winter is approaching with
no prospect of hettrr means of com-
munication with the outer world than
has existed during other vviuter.=. We
have had sad experience of how inade-
quate are they. With the Tunnel how
changed would be our circumstances.

Autumn owns.
This is the season for the Nature lover
to study Natures mysteries.
The simplest iittlo weed that crows
along the way shows cleverer dcsinging
than any of man‘a masterpieces. Take
for instance a few of, the devices that

fail dandelion and many others have bai-
loons of silky libres to walt their r-ccds to

CHURCH UNION-
Rev. Geo. Steel oi Bedeque who is a
member of the General Committee with
whom rests the considering and deciding
olquestions ln relation no the proposed
Union oi' the Mrt.hodlst,I’resbyterian and
Congregational Churches of Canada and
Newfoundland, was the other day inlet-
vlewed on his way home from Toronto,
wheic he had been attending a meeting
of the Committee.
The mteunglasted for five days and
there were three sessions each day. Each
morning there was a united committee
meeting; lulhe afternoon the suh-com-
mittee held n.c=tinge and the evenings
were devoted to denominational rallies.
Mr. Steel said that it had been a great
pleasuretohim to be present at the
m°eting, apart irom the fact that bo is
an enthusiastic worker in favor of the
movement and ielt that a great deal has
been accomplished. It was a valued
privilege to be one of such a large and
representn'lvs gathr-ring of his
lellow workers. He said the pro-
ceedings at all the meetings had been
marked by the most gratifying frankness
and curdiaity. Ev.-ry subject of imports
ance in connection with the union ol thi
churches has been discus-,oi with thi
greatest freedom and aiiability.
l The union ofthe churches is a great un
iriertaking and one which must be carefui~
ly considrrei from cvrry possible stand-
point. The possibilities are i'ar~re.ching
and of vital importance to the religIou~
world. Mr. St cl's| opinion is that th.
union is practicable and that it is quit
probable that it is only a matter of tim»

That Mr. Steels ideas arc shared by
his brothers of the committee isshown
by the fact that ut the last session a
resolution was passci hy a standing \'o'e,
that the union was deemed pruciicnhlr
by the committee. This is considercrl a
greet step toward the consummation of
the union as it is an indication that the
members will gi hack to their iii-ids or
laborthroughout the lliminion with the
union principle at heart.
