Yet the elimination - of the middleman, which is the real problem, has not yet been provided for. Between the producer and ultim- ate consumer there is a zone which must bc exploited by experienced business men. These men must have their toll; it. is the legitimate wage for legitimate work and there is nothing to show that they are more voracious or more exacting than eith- er the producer or the consumer. A characteristic of these latter days of ours is that every man-and pos- sibly every woman-wants to exact the highest possible price for every- thing he has to sell, and the lowest for everything he buys. This char- acteristic has been developed until it has become ii religion, and we are living in ri religious age. lixtortion- atc exactions of this kind at both -nds of the bargain have more to do with the high cost of living than any thing else that has so far been dis- covered, tariffs, middleman and all included. To a mere man, however, the fact; that a woman has tackled the prob- lem is a hopeful one. He believes there is much that a woman can do in the matter of reducing the cost. of living; indeed he believes that the main body of this modern incubus. this high cost of living, is to be iouiid in the realm over which wo- men specially hold sway. We realize that this is dangerous ground but ue realize also that until the pro- hlcm is tuken hold of by thc women it will not be solved. It is a hope- ful symptom, therefore, that they are entering the field. There is a mistaken idea that the high cost of living centres around the food problem. Hoiiseholders will bear us out in the statement tliat the cost of the faruily's food is by no means the highest item in the yearly expense account. The wardrobe is a much more serious matter. Take, ' for example, that mysterious thing, a lady‘s hat. To mere man it bus, since the latest turn in fashion's wheel, leon an unfathomod mystery that a lady's hat should cost from ten to fifteen dollars, while he him.- sclf can buy the best silk hat for five dollars and a good enough "go to nieetin" felt hat for three. More- over, mt-rc man has never yet been able to figure out or to understand where the ten, twenty, or ' fifty dollars worth of goods or work is to he found on milady's hat. The hat is mentioned only because it is the only item in a lady's wardrobe that he knows by name, but he is of the opinion that all the rest of it is proportionately unreasonable. It. is because of this and some sim- ilar mysteries that need not be men- tioned here, that men hail the advent of woman into the ringiin which this problem is to be wrestled with. A reform in this one department would generation has seen his feeble and futile protest registered against it in vnin.
