It is is stated that theese were, without exception, followers of the Government. Mr. Wise, the Farmer and Opposition candidate, made his statement clearly and satiafactorily. | He was followed by Dr.Douglas who said | that he was proud to be a supporter of the Farquharson Government and ook credit to the grits in office for everythingfthet Lib erals have ever done for the country, from Respousitle Government and Free Educea- tion to the building (after years of delay) of the snnex to the Lunatic «sylum. Io passing, he appealed to French feeliug on behalf of Sir Wilfria Laurier and referred to the presence of Messra J. F. Arsenault M. L. A., and Gillbert DesRoches, M. L. As This at once brought Mr Arsenault to bis feet. Mr Arsensult scored the govern- ment heavily on their many falee and un. redeemed pledges trd promiees—,making some very decided bits. Mr John Whear,Law Clerk of the Legis- laiure, followed aud prattled about th> “great epthusistm for the government which existed at West River;” and the ‘‘greal increase ia the cost of education to which he attributed all the deficits that have been made by the government, year ‘fier year, notwithstanding the taxes wrung frcus the people, He,forgot to say that the number of children educated in the public schools had not increased. Mr. DesRoches, of Miecouche, then de- livered the epeech of the evening,—fuli of fire, eloquence and good points ageinst the Pineau-Farqubarson combination. He spoke in terms of admirat on of the Rus~ tico settiement and the fine farms bv which it was ‘sdorned, and said that the farmers of the Province ought to be represented by farmers in the Legislature. As to justice to the French peopl, of which the doctor candidate had boasted, be referred to the fact that the high position of Senator to which the Conservatives had appointed the late Hon. Mr. Arsenault, was tow occupied by the Hen. John Yeo—the excuse being made that there was nota Frenchman i the party who was fit. For the preeent Legislature, there are two doors and seven duorkeepers, and not one of these is of Frenck descent. These were samples of the treatment accorded the Fiench by the Liberols in office at Octawa and Charlottetown. He advised the elec- tors to look to their own interests, to send good farmers (0 represent farmers’ interests, and ended with a stirriog appeal! on behalf of the farmer-candidate, Mr. Wise. Mr. Robert Stevezson an elderly gentle. man referred to the great measures of Cole; and Whelan ss reasons why the electors should nov vote for the doctor- candidate of the Farqubarson Adminis:ra- tion. By this time, the whiskey which had been brought to the meeting, began to have the effect in- tended, »nd there was to much noiee and coofusion in the rear of the bal! that Mr. McDonald was beard with dificulty, The noise did not cease when the Pre mier took the floor, bad not gone far when 4 emall fight broke out, attracting so much attention that he had to etop. By therflorts of the chair- man aod o.hers the fray soon ceased, But Mr. Farqubarson was in oo hurry to begin again. His conduct aroused a toat he would not b+ averse abroad, in Wes: River, tbat he was pre Susp'cion vented from tpeakiog at Rustico. Bat this object was prevented. After much persuasion, Mr. Farquharson continued his address, assailing the Star aod THe Examiner and doing its best to silr up feeling against Mr. Wise. It was close upon twelve o’clock when Mr. Shaw began his address which was eo racy and pointed that the attention of even those whom the Grits bad made drink was commanded for the first fifteen minutes. After that there was some noise, but Mr. Shaw was enabled to con- clude his half hour speech amid rounds of applauee. It is significant that first Mr. Farquharson and then Dr. Douglass were Constrained to leave the meeting while Mr. Shaw was critizing the Government. Hon. William Campbell moved the vote of thanks to the chairman,—whicb Mr. | Gallant acknowledged, at the same time denounced the conduct of those who had disturbed the meeting and at- tempted, wrongfully and unsuccessfully ,to bring disgrace upon Rustico.
