The hundred and one articles _of food, of condiments, of sweets, etc., at pre- sent on the market, sell on the strength of the label rather than on the merit of the article itself. Epicures have learned to ask for So and So’s baked beans, for some one else’s chewing gum, for another’s brand of cigars and they will accept no other. Some times the wi‘ong_labe_l gets on to an article but the epicure in nine cases ten' does not discover the error. He goes by the label. _ The other day the London Times pub- lished a piece of doggerel verse, fraudu- lentily signed "Rudyard Kipling,” and did not discover its error until Rudyard Kip- ling disclaimed the authorship. Thereupon the Times apologized to its readers for the unintentional fraud practised upon them. The point of this joke was that if the dog- gerel had really been Kipling’s-and Kip- ling has written some very poor stuff-it would have been worth a guinea a line and the Times would have paid it. As it was not Kipling’s and being only doggerel, it was worth nothing, except an apology for publishing it. _ There are several inferences which might be drawn from this joke. One is' that, had this particular poem been far su- perior to the ordinary Kipling poetry and bore the name of an unknown author, the probability' is that the Times would have refused it for the Times, be it remembered, is very particular. This has happened more- than once in the devious history of litera- ture. Some of the best works both in lite- rature and in art have lain. for years in the p_u_blishei"s desk or been peddled backward and forward between the authorand im- moveable publishers until some one, wear- ing a label of his own, discovered the thing and declared it good. Then the publishers Who had refused to consider it fell over each other in their efforts to secure it. This again shows the value of a label. An ob- scure schol_ar or philosopher might have boosted the article in question till dooms- day without impressing either the publish- ers or the public. -_ A label, therefore, may be said to be a great, if not an absolute, necessity to suc- cess. in any undertaking. How to secure an 'effective label? Produce a good article, la- bel it and stick to the label. Make the la- bel known, make a noise about it. Don’t let the contents of the package belie the la- belfor even the word “Kippling” would not long continue to sell unworthy verse at a-_guinea a line. The label counts for -much and may carry an article far beyond the point where merit ends, as is demon- strated daily in the markets but merit with a good label will endure to the end. ~' It has been said that “a rose by any other name would smell as sweet,” but let the florist try to sell his roses by another name, even by the perfume, and he will fiiidthem a drug on his hands until the new name has been established as a per- manent label. We may be misled by a la- bel that has outlived what it originally stood for. This is a human weakness, per- h_a“ps a misfortune. If we were governed by' real values we would buy our baked beans our chewing gum or our poem bn their merits alone without reference to the iiifmiesof the packer or the poet. A label is a._guarantee at least of original merit and the world is looking for a guarantee of what it pays for. True the world is often deceived by a spurious label but the de- ception is always temporary and nothing finally succeeds except the true and the honest. _ ..__.__) 0( STICK 'ro I1' » t~ 9;. ,.-_-, V _ There are other places than Charlot- i » - .a , , -. . _ . i___ \ . _ -. ..-<:. ,,..~ \h>.`.""...
