OTTAWA, June 1--All the remain- ing items of the main estimates for 1918-14 were passed Saturday night. As is usual when prorogatlon ap- proaches business was transacted with despatch. Speeches were brief and there was no occasion for the en- forceliicntx of closure rules. When House assembled reference was made by the Prime Minister and Sir Wil- fred Laurier to the death of Jas. P. Brown, who represented Chateau Guay in the Commons for more than 20 years. Hon. Mr. Pelletier withdrew his bill providing for the conveyance of letter carriers on' electric railways giving information as to reasons for its introduction. Early in the session his department had difficulty in mak- ing terms for the carriage of Mon- treal's 308 postmen in cars of the Montreal Street Railway. He had finally reached an agreement that the men be carried at the_rate of $30 per head or $15,000 a year, The Tor- onto Railway Company agreed to carry 355 Toronto postmen for $34 a head or $12,000 per year. The total would not increase with the increase in the number of postmen during the four years the contract would be in force. In Ottawa, where there -are 87- postmen the government has to pay $75 a head per year. , Mr, Nickle asked whetlfer a com- pany having provincial charters could he compelled by fedcrul legisla- tion to carry‘fedcral employes. The Post Master General rcplled the justice department held they could. Public works estimates were taken up and a brief discussion ensued as to the policy of government in rc- gard to dredging. ' Mr. German held that the Canadian Government should not go into the dredging business but chould employ private firms. With this view Hon lfiobcrt Rogers was inclined to agree- but pointed out that the Government had a .plant and that some of its dredges were in such places that they could not read- ily be disposed of. . THE MARCONI TROUBLE. ""NEW~’fYORK, May 31. A cable from London says :-"Postrnaster- General Samuels, when cross-exam- ined in the trial of Cecil Chesterton, on charges of publishing defamatory libels in the Eye Witness and thc New Witness, regarding Godfrey. Isaacs, managing director of the Marconi company, was asked whether Mr. Isaacs wanted to he kept secret the clause by which the government could end its agreement with the Marconi company at the end of eighteen years '!" "No, I do not think it was that clause," replied Mr. Samuels. "The clause he wanted kept secret was the one by which he could terminate the agreement at any time and cease' to pay royalties by ceasing to use the Marconi patent. I never assented to this being kept secret," and he withdrew his request. PASSING OF FAMOUS OLD RACE TRACK.- NEW YORK. IIAIIWAI IIEEISEIIS EIIJIIY IIIIEEKS IIIASII III AUSIIIAIIA IIII THE IIIIEIIII SAIIIEIIIIIIIM Preaching last evening in St. James Church on "Good the ultimate goal of ill." the Rev. Dr. Fullerton refer- red to the social work of' the Church and the great progress which had been made in the social condition of the people generally. Social work had its origin in the Church, and it was due to the church that this should be recognized and appreciated. In this connection he took the oppor- tunity ol expressing on his own be- half and also in the name of tile con- gregation the`ir thanks to the member of the government for bis munihcent gift of a sanitarium for tuberculosis. That was one of the finest displays of religion pure and undefiled he knew of. But unless the community as a whole took an internet in the institu- tion, and saw that it was properly and efficiently supported, it would be of little avail. ‘Would it not be dis- astrous if the institution was not sup- ported by the spontaneous efforts of the people and was allowed to share the fate of the Macdonald Consolidat- ed School? Would it not be the high- est Christianity to save the lives of those who were the victims of that dread scourge by any sacrifice we could make? If it was the duty of our schoolmasters to equip the rising generation that they may have the greatest success in life; was it not of even greater 'importance that we should unite ln supporting an effort such as this which was intended to relieve suffering humanity? M EIIISI SUIEMII MASS BY EAIHEII MSIIIIIIIII llcv. Father Frank McQuaid cele- brutcd his first High Mass in the Pro-Cathedral yesterday, The sermon, which was exception- ally eloquent and forceful was preached hy Rev. Dr. F. C. He paid n fitting tribute n the predecessors of the present ishop referring to their saintly lives and their missionary zeal. He congratulated both the con- gregation and Bishop 0’Leary who he hoped, would be long spared to reign ovcr his people. uae'-irrpz-'gg CONFIRMATION FOR METHODIBTS. Charles Morgan. of Rosedale, seconded by Dr. Andrew Stewart of Wesley College, was ad- opted unanimously, and will go as a resolution before_ the Brandon _con- ference this summer.
