Clerical Influence. a letter signed, ‘John Darlington, King’s Ce,” from which it appears that he is not vety well pleased with certain clergymen because they tock an active part ia the late dinion election. ow in voting and canvassing they did only what every British subject had a per- feet right to do (if he was nut by law dia- qualified) and in supporting the Conserva- tive candidates, what every true Canadian who loves his country should have done. w, Sir, t» show Mr. Darlington and others of the same ilk the authority the priesthood have in secular affiirs, I beg te quote from the first epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians : Chap. 6, 2—‘* Know you not that the saints shal! ju?ge this world? Ana if the world shall be jadged by you, are you un- wotthy to judge the emallest matters ? Y—“Know you net that we shall judge ane How much more things of this w ™ #—1f, therefore, you shall have judg- iiénts about the things of this world; set them toe judge who are most despised in & Caurch ?” n accordance with this power to judge, the Sitayuien of the church judged the two great political parties of Canada, and they - found the Grita guilty of disloyalty to Canada, general pelitical dishonesty, and very much wanting in ability. Oa the ether hand, they found the Conservative | party true as steel to Canada, honest, and | possessing remarkable administrative talent. | We see at present a splendid example, | proving the truth of this judgment, in the candidates contesting the Firat Electors! District of King’s County. Consequently, in the exercise of that civil and religious liberty, of which Mr. Darlington would deprive them, they went to the polis on the glorious Sth of March and gave their ver- diet. Hence the grumbling of the con- demned. Well, they are to oe pitied ; but | whe can weep fur them? Poor fellows ! Now if wo were to take away the author- ity of the Church from the political system wat would be the result? Laws would be so regardless of Christian principles t e standard of morality, pulitical and social, would be brought as low aa it was in thedays of Sodom and Gomorrah. Take for instance in the United States, on account of abse“.ce of church influence in their legisiative ‘os@mblies ;*we eee, a devorce lsw that is a , Cims to a nation caling itself civilized . The bond-of marriage, that bulwark of family happiness, is less biading than en ordinary | bili of sule. It evme states it is easier to yet: a devyorce than a ‘eceipt tor five doltars, and thigisthe nation to which the git baders would unite ua if they had the power. : eve us from such «a mire of political dig adatira, is the sincere wish uf , ead in the late contest they did ty as Christian patriots. pn J. ¥ But I fear Mr. Darlington is one of those | unfortunate beings, of whom St. Paul speake, in his First Kpistie to Timothy. Chap. 1, 6. “From which things some going | astray are turned aside to vain talk. 7. | Desiring to be teachers of the law, under- | standing neither the things they say, por whereof they affirm.” If #0 his case is a hard one. Hoping, however, that the above texts from St. Paul may cause him to repent his folly, and teach him to respect the priest: hood, who St. Paul says siiine as lights in the world, and thanking you for space in your excellent paper, I remain yours, etc , Gro A L&sLIE. Cherry Grove, Lot 45, March 24, 1891. ——————————— Mink River Road Jotiings. Mr. John Irving is busily engaged in building a large boat, and preparing for the lobster fishing—when the season comes areund. Mr. Keenan, formerly of Murray River, but now in this vicinity, is doing a large business in boot and shoe making. e keeps one hand constantly employed, and says he cannot fill all the orders that he re- ceives. The ratepayers of Mink River Road have decided to hold a meeting in the schoolhouse, on Saturday, 28th inst., for the purpose of changing the name of the said road, ss all the minke around this se tle- ment have disappeared, and it would be much better to have the name altered. 1 wish to call the attention of my fellow- ratepayers to make an united effort, at the| coming annual schvol meeting, Lo see about building « larger schoolhouse with two apartments in it, wherein the children of the district may receive a suitable educa- tion. At present in this growing settlement we have some fifty householders, with over ninety children. of a school age, and it is impossible for any teacher tc make scholars outof this ssid school, as our present teacher has between fifty and sixty of a daily average; whereas if we get the name ot the said road changed and a new school- house built, it would make 4 marked change in the place.
