' PEI Fishermen Concentrating On Mackerel, Smelt Much of the fishing effort in Prince Edward Island is being concentrated on ‘macherel and smelt the Dept. of Fishery re- ports. Smelt gill net catches on both the north and south shores were good, with catches averag- ing from three to five pounds per net. Smelt prices ranged from 15 cents to 17 cents a pound. Island oyster fishermen had a tt‘airly good week. Fishing was carried on both public and leas- ed areas. Prices ranged from $20 to $22 a barrel. Fishing activity has decreas- ed in the Bay of Fundy area 2n New Brunswick. Many of the weirs have been stripped lay- ofif, while many fishermen are using their time getting lobster- ing gear ready for the opening of the season on Nov. 15. In some districts, the lobster fishing effort will be intensified during the coming season. but in other communities fishermen plan to reduce their number of traps. With one situation count‘ cr~balancing the other, the fishing effort is expected to be. about the same as last year. Three Appeals In City Court Three men appearing in Char- lottetown Police Court Friday morning on charges of being drunk and incapable were handed heavy lines by Magistrate K.M. .\l:irt=n. I'!‘ WAS COUNTED a miracle as 12 Springhill miners were rescued in the early hours of Thursday morning after being trapped for six and one half days and given up as dead for most of that time. And there was a similar quality of unexpected- ness, with just a little of the miracle about it as well, when Prince Philip made a special Arson Case Is Five young men in their late teens and eanly twenties appeared before Magistrate Gilbert A. Gau- det in County Magistrate's Court on Friday afternoon on two separ- ate charges. The charges laid against the five were that they did wilfully and without legal justification set fire to a garage owned by Jack MacIntyre of Milton. tiheretby committing the indictable offense of arson. The second charge was that they did wilfully and with- out legal justificaton commit damage to certain real property, to wit nine windows in the Milton Public School. Only two of the accused were represented by J .O.C.- Campbell, Q.C. They were residents of North River and West Royalty. The other three boys included two from Charlottetown and another from North River. ‘ Neither election nor plea was taken by Magistrate Gaudet yes- terday and the cases were re- manded to Friday. November 7th with bail set at $250 cash or a $500 bond with two sureties of $250 each. The quinltette were arrested yesterday by Sergeant D.S. Davis and Constable Peter Borys of the R.C.M.P. detachment in Char- lottvetiown‘ . Four other youths, all residents of North Rustico, were arraigned in court on charges laid by a Wheatley River man. The charges arose out of a fight in the Junior Farmer’s Recreation Hall in New Glasgow on October 21st. Three of the accused were ohaarged with causing a distur- bance in a public place by tight- ing while the fourth was charged with using obscene language in a public place. Evidence was given by the com- plainant against one of the ac- cused charged with fightingL The case against the four youths was adjourned to Friday, November 7th. Two men. resdents of Rustico— vine and Grafton Street in the city, were fined $20 and costs or 30 days when they pleaded guilty to illegal possession of liquor.
