The following interesting article is Ifroni thc Fisheries News Bulletin, published inorithly by the Depart- incnt ol' Fisheries, Ottawa.: Capture of Brown trout weighing as much as seven and a quarter pounds iii Loch Lomond, N. B., last lsunimer is one of the evidences of tlic value of work carried on by the Fish Culture Division of the Domin- ion Department of Fisheries to in- troduce new varietles of fish into Janadian waters and to build up the stocks of native fish. Brown trout are not indigenous to North America but a few years ago the Fish Culture Division introduc- cd them into some Dominion waters and what has happened all Loch L0. inond is a proof of what work of this kind can accomplish. Further evid- ciiccs of the value of fish cultural effort was observable in the Mari- time Provinces last year in such facts as these which have been reported to thc Department of Fisheries by James Catt, District Supervisor of Fish Culturez- There was satisfactory improve- ment in the stock of small-mouthed lhlack bass in Bocahec Lake, N. B., ‘where these fish--native oi’ Canada but not to Bocabec--were introduc- ed by the Fish Culture Division sev- eral years ago; in Pisquid Lake, P. E. I. the July catch oi' Rainbow trout, a fine gamey fish introduced into this water from Western Can- ada four or five years ago, exceeded the number of fish taken in the en- tire season in any previous year; and ii vcry greatly increased bag of Sal- mo scbago (land-locked salmon) wus marie in Chamcock Lake, N.B., where the Division has been working to build up the former stock of these fish, Similar evidences of the fruitful- ness of intelligent fish cultural work has been observable in other parts of the Dominion. Activities in 1930 During the summer of 1930 high temperatures and drought in differ- cnt parts of the Maritime Provinces tended to make for losses of fry and fingei-lings in the hatchery opera- tions of the Fish Culture Division in this section of the Dominion but, on the whole, “the seasons distribution was most satisfactory." All told, there was a distribution totalling more than 28,000,000 fry, fingerllngs, etc., from the Maritime Province liatclieries. Atlantic salmon and Speckled trout distributions made up by far the greater part of the total. The year's collections were confin- ed to_ the trout stocks at the several liatchei-ies carrying brood fish and to three varieties of wild fish-Salma solar. or Atlantic salmon. Salmo, se- bago, oi- Landlocked salmon, and Slilvaliniis fontlnalls. or Specified brook trout. The usual collection of Atlantic saliiioiiwas increased, part- ly as a result of the Lise of new and improved equipment at Morell Riv- er. P.E.I. Improvement in fish cul- turc equipment during the year ln- |cludcd the construction or installa- |tioii of a large trap, pounds, and a 'spawning shed at the mouth of .Morell River, new fingerllng ponds ‘at the hatchery at Bedford, 14.5,, a new deep brood pond for trout at the |liutchery at Florenceville, N.B., and 'additional batteries of hatching troughs at Antigoriieh, N. S. An interesting feature 'of the years program was the continua- tion of the work in selective breeding of trout. Promising progress was made in this connection. Investiga- tions carried on included experi- ments as to the nutritional value of various feeding mixtures for fry and as to the percentage of free oxygen exhausted from water by salmon flngcrlings. Another interesting bit _of work was an effort to perfect a new form of oxygen tank for use in transporting fish. Further work was done during the year foward deter- mining what waters ln Nova Scotia Rainbow trout, and examinations looking to an improvement in the _ salmon runs were made on the Mer- ‘sey River, N.B., and at last River, Sheet. ll-Iarbour.
