PATON’S MILLINERY OPENING. Paton & Co’s Easter millinery opening last night was a distinct success. The Big Store was crowded with people, the crush in tbe millinery depart- ment being so great that at Limes it was almost iwpossitle to move. The store was handsomely decorated, silks, laces ‘and flowers predominating, and the appearance presented was beauti~ ful indeed. Passing from the main store into the millinery room the sight which met the onlooker was indeed bewildering. The display of trimmed and untrimmed hats and tonnete wes 'arge,and the very latest styles were to be seen. Shaw, the latter of Private McDonald’s company. The remains were immediately taken to his home in Covehead, where they will be consigned tothe grave to-day with mili- tary honors. The People’s Store. was held last evening before Coroner Mo-~ Leod and ajury- Dr. Conroy, who made the pos: mortem examination, and Joha Yeo, tbe driver of the engine, gave evi- dence. The jury, after a ehort delibera- tion, returned a verdict to the effect that Cavanagh’s death was caused by his being struck on the head by an engine while acleep on the track, the railway officials being fxonerated from responsibility. The jury gave their fees to the family of the deceased. Ay Important Arrest.— Evangeliste Joly ,painterand decorator, hasfbeen arrested in Montreal charged with being the author of three mysterious burglaries committed Railway at Joliette, Que. The firet burglary took place in 1896, when $6,000 was :bstracted from the eafe. A year later $3,500 was taken and the station building burned. In August, 1899, the station was robbed a third time and $7,000 etolen, Not a clue was left behind, but inthe money stolenin the third burglary there was a bundle of Dominion one doliar notes which had come straight from the receiver general and of which the numbers had been preserved. A circular was sent out giving these num- bers end a clue finally tound, which being worked up resulted iv Jo}ly’s arrest. The officers claim to have tourd incriminating evidence.
