Mr. McDonald, situated in the rear of his residence on Upper Hillsborough Street. As the debris blazed up, the house on the east side, owned by Messrs. “tiggins and Hendry, ran a nar- row eseape, and was only saved by a number of energetic eitizens wha kept water buckets eonstantly at work until she steam engine commenced to play. An interesting feature of the pro- ceedings will be‘the teaching of classes by several of the teachers present. Tue scarcity of water at the fire yesterday day was the cause of general comment. Thi tank at the head of Hillsborough street was empty, the supply io the pumps in that vicin- ity was very small, and in order to ebtain a sufficient quantity of water to quench the fire Silsby engine had to take a position at Lea's factory and pumped into the tank at King’s Square, from which ‘* Rollo” engine drew sufficient to extingu’sh the flames. In order‘o perform this work the firemen had to ue every available length of hose, and pump the water up ahigh grade. Had the fire, yester- day, oceurred in a closely built block, and had a strong wind prevailed, the northern portion, the city would be destroyed before water could be obtained to stay the progress of the fire. This being the case, who is to blame? Wehave made enquiries and fiud the City Council are, and the reason is this : the tard'ness of the members in rebuilding, or havin the tank at the head of Hillsborough street made water tight.
