The second main division of the work relates tothe Period of Demoli- ilization. From the point of view of the soldier this will he the most crit- ical period of the whole history of our army. Dr. Tory, therefore, recom- mends that plans be put on foot to plant 'an educational system in one central campia University in khaki -where practically all branches of study that could possibly be offered would be offered and with an exten- tion department going out to every camp in England or France. The courses offered would include; Studies leading to Matriculation, Agriculture, Business Training, Academic College Work, Engineering, Normal Training, Medical Instruction, Legal Studies, Religious Work, Physical Education. etc. Upon returning to Canada the lat- ter part of September. Dr. Tory laid his plans before the National Coun- cil. These were unanimously endors- ed and the hope expressed that Dr. Tory would be able to assume per- manent direction of this important work. Since that time conferences have been held with Presidents of Universities and Colleges and other educational leaders throughout the Dominion, resulting in the organiza- tion of an Advisory Council of which President Falconer of the University of Toronto is chairman. Assurance has been given that credit will be stitutions throughout the country for courses satisfactorily completed over- seas. Early in January, Dr. Tory, having accepted the invitation of the National Council to become Director of this educational, work, sailed for uvers'cas`,& having secured from the Government prior to his departure, very strong approval of the general character of the work proposed. Since Dr. Tory’s visit overseas rap- id progress has been made in the de- velopment of’ the Educational Work, both in England and France_ along all the lines indicated under the first heading of Dr. 'Tory's report, includ- ing Educationul Lectures, Small Stu- dy and Reading Groups, and the de- velopment of a systematic Library Scheme. In Camp Witley alone, within one month after Dr. Tory’s visit, 700 different soldiers were en- gaged in study under, the instruction of volunteer leadership. , A small committee was appointed by Major-General Turner, with re- presentatives from the Military Do- partment and Chaplains' Service and with Lieut.-Col. Birks as Y.M.C.A. re- presentative. to visit and report up- on Educational Wiork in the camps In England and France. Dr. Tory says: “I am firmly convinced that no great- er service could be rendered Canada looking towards the reconstruction days, than that the educational pro- gram propoled should he can-led out in is general spirit. In the first place a feeling of gratification would be created among the men in the in-my by the knowledge that the people at, home were thinking and planning for their future in n practical way. This feeling, I am sure. would be resected very strongly in the relations of the returned men to the public at home during the resettlement period, s period which will certainly be very trying for Canada. In the second place it would help to settle in a de- finite groove a considerable number of men who today are in doubt as to their future by giving them a start' along the line of their future life be- fore they return hoine. ln the third place, as the army contains a great body of the choicest men of Canada, brought together from all parts ofthe country, no greater opportunity could ever occur for the educational forces at home in the army to make them- selves feit in_the development of the national spirit and the promotion of the national and imperial ideals cre- ated by the war. “ln a. word. the University in Khaki mighi._he-made_the..st.arting point of a great movement not only in agri- culture and indiistrq, but in the spir- itual, educationai and political life of Canada.” - It is interesting to note thaIaStudy Course for the training of Y.M.C.A. Wai Garden Bulletin PRACTICAL DAILY GUIDE FOR VACANT LOT AND -BACKYARD GARDENERS ENLISTED IN GREATER PRODUCTION CAMPAIGN Notes on Garden Pests Issued by the Canada Food Board in collaboration with the Dominion Entomologlst MARY, GET YOUR HOE Any seeds sown in .func should go deeper than those planted earlier in the year and care should be taken to press the soil into firm contact with the seeds when. covering them because the soil is apt to be dry to a depth of several inches, in sections where the rainfall has been low. Where water- ing is resorted to, the moisture should go under the seeds in the row before sowing. It does no good to sprinkle the top of the ground after sowing. June is a hard taskmaster as a rule for the amateur gardener. Weeds grow apace; hugs flourish; the ground' is thirsty. Watering can, spray pump and -hoe must be kept working over- time. The woman in the home can spare half an hour or so a day from her household duties to cope with the weeds. "M-ary, get your hoe" is one of the patriotic refrnins of the year to which she might give some heed. ii iiiniiiii JOSEPH LAWRENCE MCLELLAN At Grand' River, Lot 14, on Tuesday the lilth inst Joseph Lawrence Mc- Lellan son of Angus' 'Mc‘Lellan, -pass- ed away. The deceased was a young mr~i of upright character, beloved by his many friends and his demise at the early age of 27 is a sore blow to them all but especially to his aged parents. He enlisted in the 105th Battalion and after training in Sum- morside -went to Vaicartier and there developed tuberculosis. He spent some time in the sanitorium and was discharged from the army. He great- ly regretted that he was unable to go to the front and even die a soldier's death. He was the third member of the family to enlist. John, who en- listed from the Canadian West, was killed at the Somnie and James, the youngest. who enlisted from the Red Cross drug store, Summerside, was killed at Passciiendaele. The sym- pathy of the whole community goes out to Mr. and Mrs. McLellan in their -bereavement. There remain only two children, Marshal at home and Mrs. J. -Buote in Providence, R. l. The other three they have given to their country. Joseph McLellan bore his long illness with christian fortit- ude and he was consoied by the- fre- quent visits of his pastor, Father John A. Macdonald and Father Connolly. He died fortified with all the rites of the 'Catholic Church. His funeral to St. Patrick's church on Tuesday was largely attended. The services were conducted by the pastor, the llev. John A. McDonald. assisted by a full ciioir. While his brothers sleep on the blood iitnineil fields of France his remains were quietly' laid to rest in the cemetery of his nat- ive' parish at Grand River, there to await a glorious resurrection.
