Those who :do not at one time or another .meddle in the affairs of other folks, or try to, are few and far between. l One evening when Peter Rabbit was over in the Green Forest it popped into his head that there was one of his friends whom he ‘had not seen of late. It was Mrs. lTimmy the Flying Squirrel. Tim- ,my he had seen almost every time he hid Spent an evening in the iGreen Forest. and that had been almait every night, since spring ‘began. There is always so much ‘going on there at this season of the year that Peter simply cannot stay at home in the dear Old zBrlar-patch lest he miss some- ythlng. Peter mentioned to Mrs. Peter that he hadn't seen Mrs. ‘Iimrny for qulte a while. I, “What of it?" asked Mrs. Peter sitar-ply. "something may have happened to her," said Peter. "And- if it had, what business is that of yours?" demanded Mrs. Peter. Peter had to admit that it was no affair- of his, and that if any- thing had happened to her there was nothing he coulddo about it. Still he wanted to know, and every time he was where he had been used to seeing her he looked for her. Whenever he caught a glimpse of a small person’ gliding down from the top of one tree to the foot of another he would scarnper after them only to find that ft was Tim- my. not Mrs. ‘Timmy. Seldom would Timmy stay low enough on a tree for Peter to talk with him, and when he did Peter found out noth- ing he didn't already know. “She isn't around." Timmy would say when Peter would ask where Mrs. Timmy was. Then before Peter could ask an- other questlon Timmy would be running up to the mp of the tree. He was as much at home in the tops of trees as Peter was on the ground. Peter often had wondered at the way in which Chatterer the Red Squirrel and Happy Jack the Gray Squirrel ran and jumped in the tree tops with no fear of falling, but when he watched Timmy or Mrs. ‘Timmy they ran and lumped so quickly that ft made the others seem slow and al- most clumsy. And when Timmy and Mrs. Timmy chased each other from tree to tree or had Jumping matches he sometimes quite lost his breath at their seeun-ihg daring. It was something to see. But now there was only Timmy to watch. Could something have happened to pretty little Mrs. Timmy? Had Hooty the Owl caught her? it could be. 0r had Mrs. Timmy been surprised on the ground by Raddy Fox? ‘Those Flying Squirrels were not as quick on the ground as they were in the trees. Or had some other hungry hunter surprised her nmd caught her? He was sure that no one could have caught her excepting by surprise. She was too quick and too smart for that. But even the smartest are sometimes caught by surprise. It was fun to watch Timmy, but not. nearly as much fun as to watch him alone. More and more Peter missed Mrs. Timmy and more and more he wondered just what had happened to her for he had no doubt at all that something had. And he wondered. too, why ‘Timmy seemed not to miss her at all. He did wish that ‘flmmy would stay still where he could be asked a few questions. He must know what had happened to Mrs. Timmy. Peter was sure that he, Peter, would know if anything had happened to Mrs. Perm‘.
