Dairying Reports indicated that there may be an increase in milk pro- duction in Canada in 1953 due to an increasegof about 70.000 head of dairy heifers. On the other hand an export of dairy cattle to the United States will overcome that advantage to some extent "Iliere is not any indication that two-.. ..........-................. powerful. 125-Hp. r 'Auta-notk Yvummlwlun, omdrin, white sidewall elm ahd lulu mm oolloool or cure . A g deal or criticism has centered laround competition on dairy pro- ducts, particularly from substi- tutes and mixtures. and there is a real concern among dairymen regarding the impact of vegetable oils. The Conference was told by the Hun. Mr. Gardiner in un- mistakable terms that the control of this material is pretty defin- itely in the hands of each province. The esatblishment. therefore, of care of the situation is.a. matter or great importance. Such legisla- ilon is now being framed in this Province, and early in January it is expected that a meeting of top level officials will take place in Ottawa representing each of the provinces so that there may be uniform laws right across the country dealing with this very important matter. Butter prices have remained steady in the Mariiimes during the past three weeks. At present the Halifax market is quoted at 64c wholesale for first grade prints de- livered, with local Jobbing at 66c. In New Brunswick the price is the same as that of last week. The official commentary fi'om that province states that so long as the Agricultural Products Boa.rd con- tinues lo sell-its holdings back to the trade at 62c per pound, de- livcred, there will be few changes in the Canadian butter markets The prices quoted for that prov- ince for this week are: Creaiiieries legislation that is adequate to take. 660. In C'e.arlottetown the Jobbing price is 650, delivered; and the cod wholesale price is in the vicinity oi 63c. . In Montreal the wholesale price of No. 1 solids. delivered.1s62c: Toronto also 62c. The production of butter in this Province is considerably below that of last year at this time. For the week ending November 29th. 72,727 pounds were made. compar- cd with 81,982 pounds for the same week last year-a decrease of 9,255 pounds. or 11.2 per cent. Eggs and Poultry The situation on eggs is not s happy one at the present moineiit. At the same time here again re- action should not be of too pessi- mistic a nature. It is unfortunate regarding the present level of egg prices, and also of some poultry prices. The whole picture, how- ever, is not very clear at the pre- sent moment pending s. final de- cision on egg support. Supplies have not been large. and taking into consideration hatchery re- ports, it would look as it here again there may be I lowered production in the months that lie ahead. The price of eggs today took 1 very discouraging and distinct drop. and Grade AL is now being quoted at 33c, down-8 cents since last week. Prices across Canada have deteriorated, and there is some talk of Ontario eggs coming into Maritime points. This disap- pointing price level. however. should not be considered as s to wholesalers, one and two pouncljarc prints, 64c; Wholesale to rctaihtliough there may be a. temporary permanent thing. I feel that there better times ahead even I weakness in markets at the mo- ment. Egg production is increasing. Quality is reported good. All re- ceipts over local requirements ore moving resdlly to other Mu-ltime centers. Paying prices have been reduced. it is stated, due to a ...ovemeit into the Maritlmes of stocks from Ontario. and a decline in paying prices in that center. Dealers here are now quotliigfor ungraded eggs delivered AL 33 AM 30. A5 23, 13 23-5. Retail to consum- er prices have not yet adjusted to recent price decline. It is very difficult to understand these lower prices for eggs at this point, however, even with lower prices in central Canada. At Montreal in view of the following prices: AL is 40. AM as: Toronto 2c lower. But take Maritime mar- kets, At Hailf . it is true. they reduced the p ce about 5c per dozen, but they are still paying thc producer for AL 39-41: while their graded price is AL 44-46. A contact with Moncton this morning states that they are not lowering their prices at all. and the graded pack is AL 49. AM 45, and As 40. It is still further stat- ed that they are finding it diff- lcult to buy eggs as the supply in the Maritime: is not large and they could not get any supplies from Prince Edward Island.
