TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER l, I911. A Royal Welcome The visit this afternoon of His Royal High- ness, the Duke of Kent, is naturally the subject of the kceucst interest and enthusiasm. The details of the progrztmnie, starting with the ar- rival of the ducal [lélfly at the airport and cul- minating with the Government dinner this eve- ning, have appeared in the press. From the stand- point of the public, chief interest centres on the route which the cars will take from the air- port to the Provincial Building, the ceremony in the Confederation Chamber, and the Duke's ap- pearance on the balcony. These opportunities for seeing and welcoming the Royal visitor will likely occur between 6.30 and 7.30 p. m. It is to be hoped that the weather will prove more favorable than on the occasion of Their Majesties’ visit, which however could not be sur- passed so far as public enthusiasm was concern- ed. Of one important detail we are assured by Group Captain fllake. R. A- F., who is in charge of the programme. The cars conveying the ducal party will proceed through the streets st a mod- erate rste of speed, between fifteen and twenty miles per hour, so that there will be no disap- pointment on the part of spectators in this re- gard. His Highness has been flattering in hls com- ments on those parts of Canada which he has al- ready seen. The best has been reserved for the concluding days of his tour. The excellent op- ortunity he will have of seeing Prince Edward Island from the air and from his car drive through Charlottetown and surrounding areas, will undoubtedly convince him that we have, as the late Lord TWCCdSmUIF assured us, s most de- lectable place in which to live. The fact that our fair Island has been named after a former Duke of Kent, father of the pres- ent Duke's illustrious great-grandmfifllflf. QUE" Victoria, will also help to impress this visit fav- orably upon his memory. Our citizens are not unmindful of the fact that His Highness’ mission is an official one, and that as Commodore of the Royal Air Force he is par- ticularly interested in the great Commonwealth Air Tr ining Plan which will be one of the chief factor in defeating Hitler and restoring world peace and security. "Well Meriled Criticism" ‘Phls from the Financial Post (independent) which is somewhat different from the opinions sxpressed in Liberal newspapers: “Prime Minister King's visit to Britain has lot started too \vell. There has been sharp and Ivell merited criticism of his selection of press representation, there were boos among the cheers _1vhen he addressed Canadian troops abroad. “Right from the start of the war there has been a strong suspicion that Mr. King has been laying far too much stress on party politics; that he regarded himself too much as the head of a party govermncnt, rather than one representing all Canada. That suspicion will not be nllayed by his exclusion of all Canadian newspapers but one ilrom his official entourage on his present mis- nion. This restriction to a newspaper which has ulavishly stipported the King government will be regarded in the same light as Mr. King's con- tinued refusal to include any but party men in his wartime cabinet. "Unless we are vcry much mistaken the aver- age Canzidiznt is not interested in party politics Itt this time. llis whole attention is focused on the country's war effort. Ilis criticism, as repre- rented by the lions of the troops in Great Bri- tain and the cotttintiancc of challenging editorials throughout all hut a partisan minority of Can- adian ncxvspztptrts, is not directed at the Liberal Party nor the lit-ad of that party but at the lack 0f efficiency of ("anzttlrfs war effort. Mr. King cannot complain he is unsupport- sd. The vast majority of Canadians, including the troops in hnglnntl, are eager to get solidly behind him or any other lcatlcr who will play his full part, who will forget politics entirely during this critical period and devote his whole energy to putting our (‘Olliflllllllfifl to victory on l well planned and tuost efficient basis." ‘The-‘Tideizlf Hatred All over Europe, says an exchange. the tide of hate against the Xn/is steadily rises, It is a cold, bitter fury i‘ at his lmd no counrcrpttrt in mod- ern history. not crvn during the worst days of the war. \\'hnt it lioilr-s for the future is some- thing only a prophet can foretell, bu! it is a fact to be reckoned with that hundreds of millions of men and women cannot be treated as the Ger- mans have trcntcd thcm and remain normal, calm-minded people. Typically, the Germans cannot understand this. “We cannot tuidcrstatitl." says the head of the Gestapo in Norutrv, “that our friendly attitude and mztgnnnitnitgt- slluulrl mt-et with cliurlish im- putlenctvi" Another officer stationed in Copen- hagen said this to u Suu-tlish newspaper friend :_ “l would rather fight at the front than live m this intolerable atmosphere of refined hatred. The Danes ignore us as they would ignore a piece of furniture.” . Some day it will dawn on these blackheads that theirs is the fault and not that of the people whom they dominate and oppress. Meanwhile it is no wonder that the “V” campaign meets favor from the Vistula to the Tiber, for men and wo- men who have lost everything but hope, hope on and on. -. EDIIURIAI. Next day the parents get a report. Chief Martin Duffy says it is working swell. Could we not do something similar with regard to our bootleg parlours and speakeasies? Not a few of our soldiers boys would avoid such patronage if the) knew the police were daily on the rotinds. s w m w Restrictions on private consumption for the benefit of our war aims are to be increased. The new curb will include the banning of electric window displays, large electric signs, and even to a cut 1n street lighting. With regard to gaso- lene, the controller, not satisfied with the vol- untary economics has resorted to cutting down pupplies to gar stations. If this does not succeed it is possible the drivers of cars will have to carry rationing cards, for the government is com- pelled to effect an important saving in gasoline because of the serious cut in supplies and lack of transportation facilities for the crude oil. a s: i: Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector of the Com- monwealth of England, died this date 1658. I-le dismissed the Long Parliament, and as Com- mander-in-Chief became dictator, then protector. The Church was reformed, oaths, swearing and other vices were prohibited. The Court of Chan- cery was reformed also; and the condition of Scotland improved. Peace was made with Hol- land, which submitted to the Navigation Act, giv- ing Britain command of the sea. He championed the Vaudois, and Blake’s successes against Spain led to the acquisition of Dunkirk. England ac- quired a great name in Europe, and a large party sought Cromwell to become King; he refused the title owing to the Army's objection. He was buried in Westminster, btit at the Restoration his body was exhumed and hanged. U i l‘ l Its s way they have in the Army Captain Elliott Roosevelt drank ale in a Wapping wharf pub last week end and kissed 60-year-old Auntie Sue Cunningham, one of the establishment's regulars. During a tour of bombed ruins the President's son made his call. Captain Roose- velt joined in singing American songs and then the cry went up, “Speech! Speech!" “We shall be with you at the finish and all the time," he said. “You are getting stronger and stronger. We are doing our best.” Then Auntie Sue cried. “I’d like to kiss you, sir, but I suppose I mustn't." “Go right ahead,” Captain Roose- velt replied. No indication was given why they had re- signed, and the mystery appears all the greater because of the high encomiums passed recent- ,ly on one of them ‘for bravery and resourceful- tness in the discharge of his duty.
