I. _ ' _ ' December 24. 1928 Mr. I-‘_ ,Msclure Bclanders, lion. Secretary, Maritime Board of Trade, - Saint John, N, B. Dear-Mr. Sclandersz I duly received your letter of the 20th mst., with reference io Resolu- tion No. 4 passed at the Maritime Board* of Trade Meeting, asking for an extemion of summer lodges by the Canadian National Railways, and en- closing copy of letter received from Sir Henry Thornton ln reply thereto. In so .far as Prince Edward Island is concemed, I might state that o. special deputation from the Charlot- tetown Board oi’ Trade waited on slr Henry Thomton in Saint John dur- ing the organization meeting of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in 1926, requesting that the Canadian National Railways establish a summer resort in this Province. Bir }{eru°y at that time stated he could make no definite promise within two years. owing to the fact that they were oem- mitted for a very large amount for the new hotel in Vancouver. We pointed out, at tho time, that the Maritime Provinces had been-very severely discriminated against in this respect, and that it was decidedly inconsistent that all 'the funds cx- pended on summer resorts were being used to promote Central and Wmtorn Canada as attractions for tourists. Since then, the Plctou Lodge has been established, and since some competi- tion has developed through the C. P. R. entering Halifax in the Lord Nel- son Hotel; it did not take ver-y long. nor evidently was it difficult, to ilndif the necessary finances to dupllcato the C. P. R. Hotel at `Halli`ax___It _was . . ' As you are aware, no Dominion money has been expended in any shape or form in the Province ol' Prince Edward Island for either slun- mer hotels or all-year-round hotels. and considering that we have been deprived for upwards of nity years of adequate transportation facilities, and private individuals were therefore de- harred from developing Island slim- mer resorts, lt would seem we might very well look to the Maritimfe Board of Trade to endorse and follow up the demands of this Province two years ago, as above referred zo. I attach hereto. copy of the Reso~ lution passed at the last three sessions of thc P. E. I. Associated Boards of Trade, dealing with this question. Considering the prosperity that has been broadcast lately _with regard to railway nuances, and in view of the tremendous amounts that are being expended in the other Provinces of Canada to which we, as a Provinoe and partner of Canada, contrlbulc. but receive no benefit, it does not seem reasonable that this Province should be debarred for any further period in participating in hotol ex- penditures. Possibly I have not gone into the matter sufficiently for your Executive to deal with the question- from the viewpoint or Prince Edward- Island. andlwillbegledtogointothemnt- ter further at any time, if desired.
