Red Cross sends out 4,320 clothinn items “During 1963. Red Cross vol- unteers have again done a mag- nificent job of keeping up the Red Cross principle of ‘helping others'." according to Mrs. .L. Palmer, provincial chairman of the Red Cross women’: work committee. The annual report just comp!- ed by Mrs. Palmer for last year, shows that 4,320 articles of clothing were shipped to “have- not" countries. In addition to the articles i-hipped, another 400 garments are ready at Red Cross head- quarters awaiting forwarding in- structions. The report further states that new materials are now on hand for baby gowns and blankets suitable for use in tropical coun- tries. These provide a m u c h - needed change for the workers at no additional cost. and meet the demand for clothing for the warmer countries where 60 per cent of the need now exists. The materials for these garments are supplied by Red Cross from its portion of the funds collected by the P.E.I. United Fund with "(‘ashabias". which are a useful (-over-all garment for children of all ages, and are somewhat sim- ilar to the “'iarkas" used in this country. "The response to the making of these has been very good." Mrs. Palmer's report states. “but our quota of 100 is still far from complete, and ex- tra volunteers for this work would be very much appreciat- ed “ Mrs. Palmer goes on to say in her report that sometimes there are queries as to why s u c h queer looking” garments are made. and she explains that it is far better to send articles wind‘) will be used by the peo- ple for whom they are intended, rather than garments which we in Canada “think" they should have. ‘'It is wonderful to know that when disaster strikes, anywhere in the world. the Red Cross Wo- men's work committee have cases of clothing ready for im- mediate shipment, usually by air—’.ift. from our stockpiles sit- uated in strategic centres, to the sric-ken area. It is the faithful Red Cross volunteers who carry on without “fan fare ' and year out, who make it pos- sible for assistance of this kind to be immediately available" Mrs. Palmer's report continues.
