In his charge t.o the Jury the Chief Justice said that there were two crimi- nal cases. The first was against E. L. Harrington, who was charged on two counts, with first, shooting with intent to murder; and second, shooting with intent to do grievous bodily harm. ills Lordship reviewed the evidence in_the case. which he said was a seri- ous ouo. He stated that it was not well that persons who used firearms indiscriminately and injured others should do so with impunity. The next case was that of the King v. John Sherry, who is charged with the theft of $100 from a man named Barge, of St Peter's, in March last in Victoria Park. His Lordship read the statement of Burge and remarked on the folly of simple country foil: be- coming intoxicated and allowing un- scrupulous men to rob them. Re- mnrking on the escape of Sherry from jail, he said there was no indication that the man had been granted ball, and the inference was that he had gone abroad. The Jury must examine the jail closely and particularly to ascertain whether the men in charge were competent and the jail in proper condition or not. They should fear- iessly place the responsibility for the prisoner-'s escape on the party whom they considered responsible, whether jailor, sheriff or .any other officer. They were on their oath and must do. their duty. It had been brought to his attention that the _iailor was a man against whom there was an outstand- ing conviction in respect to the Pro- hibition Act. They must say whether At 5.45 p.m. the Grand Jury return ed and submitted their report. In regard to the jail they stated that some of the locks were not as they should be and recommended that other locks be placed on the doors. them briefly, remarking on the ab sence from their report of any refer- ence to the ialier. He thought there should he a fence around the jail so that persons would not be able to pass things one to another as at present through the open iron bars. I-le had called the attention of Juries to this matter, but nothing had been done. The Grand Jury were then dis- charged. During the afternoon a few civil cases were disposed of. The Schoolroom was filled. Miss Mabel Archibald gave a most interesting address. She has a very attractive way of presenting her subject. She was dressed in the beautiful dress of an Indian Princess. It was a fliiely wrought garment, which was present- ed by an Indian King to Miss Sanford. a lady nurse in connection with the Canadian Baptist mission in India. It was valued at $50, and ls worth much more. There has not been a missionary address in Charlottetown interest of the one that Miss Archibald gave last night. She has the knack of saying things in a taking way and she is a good word painter. It was a very interesting and successful meet- ing. Miss Archibald has been the the city. She leaves this morning for Summersille, to attend the Baptist Association, where she gives a couple of addresses.
