It isthe commission given by (overnor Parr, in 1783, to Mr. Cunard’s father as lieutenant of militia, Though the date of the commission is 1783, it gives the officer jurisdiction over the territory from Nova Scotia to the Penin- sala of Florida, thus refusing to recognize the Declaration of Independence and the result of the war.—St, Jonn Telegraph Acoipent.—The New Glasgow Chronicle sys; **While Mrs. Dr. Ings, daughter and sister were driving from Stellarten to New Glasgow on Saturiiay afternoon last, the horse became unmanageable near the Catholic Church, west side, and ran towards New Ginegow, turning down Blair Street, south of D, S$. (The Empire ) ae reports of Canadian banks during the portant month of March show how strong is the financial condition of Canada and re- veal a most favorable comparison with the United States, Australia, and even Great Britain. We have had no great failures or fears of failure and no special financial stringency, whilst business in other coun- tries 18 being carried op under strained con ditions or at a terrible logs. During March, according to fizures quoted by The Mone- tary ‘Times from the bank returns, the cus tomers and depositors, chiefiy the former, called for and received nearly $10,000,00u of extra mom y. It is evident that this money was with- drawn for business purposes and is now in circulation. The $7,500,000 loaned on dis sounts above the sum lent in the previous month was obviously intended for such a use, and not for speculative objects. This is clearly proved by a recapitulation of the sources from which this money was derived by the banks. The following table shows the diminution in certain invest ments during the month of March - Specie and Dominion notes ...... $1,991,000 Balance due from U.S. banks... --. 858,000 Due by Eng'ish banks............ 784,000 lucrease iu debt to EKoglish banks. . 1,652,000 Reduction incall loans............ 1,801,000 Total... . «++. $7,085,000 That the sum of $19,456,000 employed in Call loans on stocks and bonds should hive been so slightly decreased, proves that the anks were anxious ‘v accommodate the de- mands of commercis! men and trade yener- ally without materially affecting the inter- ests of those connected with the Stock Ex- changes, by whom surplus muney is so largely employed. Altogether the situation is interesting as showing the comparatively vast rescurces which our banks have to meet any unusual demand with. During the month in question, they only touched the $20,000,000 due by United States Banks, thougk uo doubt the April returns will show a heavy decrease in that particular phase of investment.
