'I‘he work of the League is essentially to look after the disease victims in their homes, ‘to contact them in the incipient stages and thereby attack the prob- lem at its source. For this purpose the servicm of a. full time health nurse, Miss Olive Ings, have been obtained, and in the past two months Miss Ings has visited 133 persons. There are, however, still some 500 contacts to be made and investigat- ed. . Up to the present, most oi the moneyvralsed by the sale oi Anti- tuberculosis Christmas seals has gone directly to support the work , carried on in the provincial Sana- torium. Only sixty beds are avail- I able for the care or patients in this l institution. This is altogether in- ] adequate to accommodate the num- ber of people needing care and supervision. The record books oi Dr. P. A. Creeiman, superintendent of the Sanatorium, contains a. list oi.’ 700 names oi persons who are, or were, in some way under the influence oi the disease. The con- dition of some 0i these was known but little could be done for them as there was no organization or funds to institute and carry on the neces- sary work. The Gyro Club and the Women's Institutes are actively sponsoring the home treatmcnt, camyiaign in- nugurated by the newly organized Tuberculosis League, under whose sponsorship the sale of Tuberculosis seals this year will be made. At a fccent meeting of the Lea- gue executive with members of the Siimmcrside T. When the Canadian Tuberculosis Association was started in. 1900, the death rate in Canada averaged 20a per 100,000. At that time there were only 400 beds for treatment oi tlic disease. there are more than 8,000 bcds—a the mortality rate. The howcr, is largely among those able to pay for treatment. The grout. advantage of the Tuberuclosis Leu- gucls present campaign is that. it will reach all closes of people in their homes. Roughly it is estimated that. the health oi five persons is endanger- ed by contact with every ucLivi: tuberculosis case. prcscntative ,ls even more contagi- ous than leprosy—a fact. which is truly startling in its implications. and which emphasizes the great need oi public co-operation in tlic League's present activities. In this connection it is emphasiz- ed that the Tuberculosis Christmas seal is not a postage stamp, but a method of raising funds for a very necessary purpose, and that fully 80 cents: of every dollar spent in these purchases goes directly to assisting the home treatment campaign. This is a movement deserving the support of every person in the Pro- vince, and it is one which Tliv Guardian has no hesitation in coni- mending as one of paramount, im- portance at the present time.
