Arthur Simpson was first to address the meeting. He spoke of the very bad con dition of our harbor at present; of the difficulties we have in getting our produce shipped off, and the failure of our generally. He argued that the distruction of our breakwater and the consequent fill ing up of the channel was the cause of this state of things, and said that as we were 50 far from the railway that itwas but a matter of justice to us that our harbor should be made as good as possible. He ut ncluded by moving the following resolution Whe The iannnens ants of this and pong districts are bject to great incon veniences for .W ant of ac cess to markets for out surp! laving no rr ilway mM commodation—and i ae filling up of the bar, our h come almost useless. D. Clark W. J. Simpson, in supporting the res lution, said that it represented lis views mm the matter. He spoke of the great want we experienced in not having a good arbor to ship our produce, and also of the ditticu'ty we had in getting our coal and lumbe1 Hea — with the mover in ad vocating steam communication with rts on the mainian a n Hogan, of Hope River, was in favor vf the resolution. He ught we should make a strong united effort to get our har bor improved. He said that in his opinion any work done to our breakwater in future should be svlid crib wi rK, a3 past eXxperi- ence had shown that that was the only work that would stand. Captain John gave his experi- ence | f the ‘Rarbor. He said that the chan- nel had become too wide and full of f Jum; 8. fle wanted the breakwater extended to confine the channel. He advocated crib work in extending the breakwater. Dr. McNeill, of Stanley, on being called mu, said he was in sympathy with the reso- tion. He said we wanted a good harbor, id thought a railway was also much need- <i in order that we might be able to ship ur produce in the spring before the ice left North Side. \fter further remarks by G. W. Simpson, H. Hogan, G. R. McNeill, D. M. Simp- sonand others, whostrongly advovated harbor improvement and argued that we were en- titled toa grant from the Dominion Gov- ernment to repair and extend our break- water, the resolution was put to the meeting and carried unanimously. G. W. Simpson then moved the follow- ing: , ana ‘ } tie Resolved, That, as no work can be con- structed in time to benefit our harbor for our next season's trade, the Dominion Government be requested to send the dredge, next spring, to cle ir out the channel, and also to dredge the channel in the vicinity of Bay View wharf, 13 we are of the opinion that a small outlay in spect would very much improve our facilities for shipping. tis t in support of this resolution Mr. Simp- son said that, in his opinion, the dredge would do good work in cle aning 0 ut a chan- nel through the bar, and also in deepening the water at Bay View wharf, whic h at present does not accommodate schouners of # large size. his reso lution was seconded by Patrick Reid, who was satistied that it was a move in the right direction, and from which he expected the very best results. The resolution was also spoken to by D. M. Simpson, <A. Simpson, John Reid, Ang rus McKenzie and the Secret tary, after which it was put and carried unanimously. lt was then ordered that the Chairman and Secretary send copies of the resolutions adepted at the meeting to the Department of Public Works, to our represent: atives at Ottawa, and to other parties who they might consider would exert an influence towards the granting of our requests. It was also ordered that areport of the imeet- ing be published in the Charlottetown papers. After a vote of thanks to the Chairman, the meeting adjourned. WALTER SIMPSON, Secretary. Feb. 12th, 1889. A writer in the Agricwtural Impiement has been studying over the mystical number seven and concluded that it is undoubtedly the sacred number. There are seven days of creation ; after seven days respite the flood came ; the years of famine and plenty were in cyc les of seven ; every seventh day was « Sabbath, every seventh year is the Sabbath of rest; after each seven times seven years came the jubilee ; the feasts of unileavened bread and the tabernacles were observed seven days ; the golden candle- stick had seven branches; seven priests with sevon “trumpets surrounded Jericho seven times and seven times the seventh day ; Jacob obtained his wives by servitudes of seven years ; Sampson kept his nuptials seven days, and on the seventh day he put a riddle to his wife, and he was bound with seven green withes and seven locks of his hair was shaved off ; Nebuchadnezzar was seven years a beast ; Sh: wlrach and his two Mipanions were cast into a furnace heated seven times more than it was wont.
