The idea of federation was that each of Lowest prices. _ 1 A the churches would°be allotted' dis- tricts, and the others would with- draw from those districts. This had been tried here in Alberta, and though he could not say that it was an absoiuteiailure, still he did not think' it was nearly as successful as church union would be. One reason was that in a town where one of the churches was going to withdraw, and he mentioned Daysland, and said he has just be tllcre recently, endeavor- ing to make arrangements for thc Methodists to talk over the church there. There were quite a few Pres- byterians there, and some of them had opposed withdrawing from there. saying that while they- had no ob- iection to a union church, they did not want to become Methodists. T-his worked the other way in places where the Methodists were going to with- draw, While a great many favored union, they objected to turn over and join -the other domination. Another objection that had been raised was that the settling of minis- ters for those congregations would be done by a stationlng committee. This was done by the Methodists now. If there was church union, this would be combined with our call system, and iw thought with a few changes this system would bc an improve- ment on either alone. He snid it was n most humiliating thing for a. cull, and added that in most chaos, too, the congregations failed to pick up thc host man. ' It was also said that if thc three were joined. there would he too big n church and this would result in a dcadness. He would refer to the Ro- man Catholic church. It had lost none of its evangelical faith or zeal. The Presbyterian church of Canada was five times as large as it was in, 1875, and it was not dcadcr now than it was then. On the contrary, it was much more alive. There would not he as much differ- ence as a great many thought, and in fact it would make but little dif- ference in the cities. but would af- fect thc small towns more. It had also been put forth that ifV union came about they would sacri- fice the great name _ of the Presby- terian Fhurch of Canada. "But", said the speaker, "the new church is going to be the Presbyterian church. The first court of the church--which' will probably bc called the United Church of Canada-will be known as the presbytery. The second court will be called the- conference, from the Methodist conference, and the third the council, from the Congregational council. The heirs of the new church can claim nil the great history of the three. l think there is n bigger prin- ciple than the mere name con~cerne
