MARCH 25, 1889. Sudden’ Death of a Merchant. We announce to-day, with regret, the death of Jolin McEachen, Esq., merchan*, jot this city,” Mr. McEachen had been un- well for somie time past, but was able to move .abouf aud attend to business as usual. Yegterday furenvon he was present at Mass in St. Dunstan’s Cathedral, and after service took a short walk preparatory to returning to his residence. Just as he was enterigg his doorway, he felt himself suddenly growing weak, and fell. Kind hands camé’to his assistance, but tvo late to be of service. When Doctors Conroy and Kelly,¢who were hastily summonec, ar- rived on the scene, only his mortal part re- mained. * Mr. MeBachen was born at Black Bush,’ Lot 44, on g¢he 3ist of August, 1828. In’ January, 1861, he married Anne Gillis, of this city, who bore him six children, three of whom—one daughter and two sons —are stili living? One of the sons is practicing law in New York, and the other is engaged in business in this city. During Whe thirty or sore years that Mr. McKachem was engaged in business in Charlottetown he made many friends. Quiet and unassuming in his manner, and frank and honorabie in his business re- lations, he was in every sense a good citizen. For a number of years he was a member of the Board of Firewardens, discharging his duties to the satisfaction of all. He was several times urged to enter political life, but his inelinations were not in that direc- tion, and he always declined the honor. Mr. McEachen was an honorary member of St. Vincent de Paul Society, and in his death the poor lose a good friend. To his bereaved wife and family, Tz ExaMINER extends its sympathy. The Fire Yesterday. Berween four and five o'clock yesterday afternoon, the tank house of the P. E. I. R., near St./ Peter’s Road, was discovered to be ot fire.“ Before any successful effort could be made to save it, however, it was burned to the ground. Besides the machinery by which the pumps were worked, there were in the building the tools of the section men, and a velocipede-trolly valued at about $30. The total loss is estimated at between $130 and $140. The fire is supposed to have its origin froma pateh of dry grass which had been set on tire by some children. The burnihg gras: spread towards the building igniting} the bottom shingles. The tire thus started spread so rapidly that in a short time the building was a mass of flames. Why He Tired of the Paper. RETREAT OF THE GRITS. } omnes | [wish your reporter had been in the House last night to describe the scene which took place at the division upon Sir Richard Cartwnght’s amendment to go into Committee of supply. The debate upon the budget speech lasted just a for*- night, and as it was announced that it noon, aud delivered himself very well. Paterson, of Brant, made a vigorous speech from the Opposition standpuint. Dickey, Sir Charles Tupper'’s successor in Cumber- land, N. S%., miade a capital speech which won him great applause. About 1.30 this (Wednesday) morning the fiat went forth {to cal in the members when the electric | bells went clattering in every corner. Dur- ‘ing the period which elapses before the whips retura to the House from hunting up | stragglers, it is customary to have a song, and this morning we had three of them. ; Joncas, of Gaspe, lad off with ** Brigadier,” — French member joining in the chorus jas only Frenehmen can. 1 wish Professor Caven could have heard it. Lady Stanley ‘and some others of the Governor-General’s , household were in the Speaker's gallery and thoroughly enjoyed the scene. Then 'Col. Prior, of Victoria, B. C., followed |with the **Red, White and Blue,” the ‘chorus of which was also heartily rendered. | Then Bechard (Opp.) gave the ‘‘ Marseil- jlaise; he is a striking-looking man, with ilong, bushy, iron-grey hair, and moustache, ; and every teature of his face was brought {into action as he sang in magnificent voice. | After this the vote was taken—12) to 77, '@ majority of 44. Cheer after cheer re- sounded through the Chamber at the an- nouncement, «nd then some of the juniors started ‘*God Save the Queen,” amid in- dignant cries of ** Order, order” frum the Opposition benches. At the suggestion of the Speaker, the singing was suspended until the House could go through the for- mality of adjournment, -whieh would occupy about oue minute. But this space of time was all too short for the Grits to vamose from the House. Helter-sketer, out they bustled while firm to their guns remained the Gov- ernment. And then, when the solemn pro- cession of Sergeant-at-Arms, Mace and Speaker had left the House, the glorious old Nationa) Anthem arose with greater enthusiasm, succeeded by cheer upon cheer from loyal Liberal-Conservatives. Where were the Grits during this scene? Out in the corridors getting into their hats and /overcoats and streaking for home as if the old boy was after them. Can you inform me, Mr. Editor, why the Grits left rather than join in ** God save the Queen ?” The vote was the largest that has been recorded this session — 199, including Speaker, and 14 members paired.
