OLeaN, March 18.—Delos Lante, an ik county farmer, had been annoyed greatly this winter by weasels in his poultry yard and houses, the blood thirsty little animals having killed his fowls by the score, and defied ail efforts to trap them. On Saturday Mr. Lante was walking through a stony tield on his farm, and saw a weasel run into a big heap of stones piled loosly in the middle of the field. He had a waiking stic’, and, going to the stone pile, began to throw down stones to get at the weasel or scare it out. Present ly 2 weasel jumped out, and he struck at it with his cane. It did not run away, but sprang at Lant’s throat—the spot a weasel instinctly tries to seize. Vine farmer struck at it again and hit it, but it retarned gamely to the attack, aod whether in answer to a signal or not the farmer does not know, weasels began to swarm outof the stone pile on all sides, and in a second were springing upon Lante, climbing nimbly up his clothes, trying to reach his face. | ‘They bit him with their sharp teeth, and finding that he would be unable lo the savage little blood-suckers trom fastening their teeth in his neck without help, he shook them off as best he could and started at thetop of his speed for home. The weasels followed him until he scaled the fenee. His hands were bleeding from a dozen wounds, and if he iad remained to fizbt the weaselsthey would have un doubtedly have overpowered and killed him. Ilo the afternoon Mr. Lante turned to the stone pile with two mer, two guns, anda dog. They routed out the weasels aod killed thirty—a colony which had been devasting the entire neighborhood for a year aed more. keep re- 7-=_eo- An Extraordinary Man. An extraordinary colored man, says the Woodstock, N. B., Times, has been exhibiting himself around town during the past few days. He claims to have two bearts, one on eich side of the lungs, aod from the pulsations on each side of the body a good many people believe his ass:riious He has also two complete sets of ribs, one over the other and both movable, Eadowned With mere organs than the ordinary rug Of mortals, he appears to be gifted with almost superhum ‘n strength, as he can lift 900 pounds with one hand, and ean bend a rod of iron, three- quarters of anineh thick, by striking ic on his bare arm, and two strong men could not bead the iron into its originai shape - <= - Liquor Shipments. Liquor is shipped from Baltimore to points io local-option counties ia the Mate under many nom de plumes. Sometimes il is marked sea foam, ex- tract of malt, hard-tack, herse shoes and spike axils, Sometimes a keg or balt barrel of whiskey is sent in a hogs head of crockery. “i have been shipp toy Whiskey this winter under every couceivable name,” remarked a steam- beat clerk yesterdy, “ but comes to me marked sewing machiues, us this package shows, it knocks me out, the favorite brands among the machines is a oew wrinkle.” — Baltimor: Py | “di.
