The American Topographical Corps have reached Jerusalem. They were detained at Mount Sinai by s snow storm. Che women crusaders at Portland, Ore- gon, who were sentenced to pay a fine of five dol ars each, are serving out their time in jail. Nearly five hundred colored persons were baptised in the river in front of St Peters- burg, Virginia, on the drd instant. Advices received from Bayonna. state that the Carlist army accomplished ita re- treat from Bilboa towards Arduna in an orderly manner, without disaster. The losses are small, and the armey is yet impact. The Suez Canal is doing well, according to the official returns of Revenue; for ins stance, during last March one hundred and twenty vessels passed through the Canal, the transit receipts of these amounted to 2,506,000 franes. This is a steady increase, the tables showing that for the correspond- ing month of 1872. the receipts were 1,333- 434 francs, and in 1873 they were 2,248,278 francs. The tonnage for the same periods was 116 253 tons. It is true that the ex» penses of maintaining the Canal are very heavy, but it is far from being the failure so many croakers predicted it would turn out. Mr. Cartyte.—Mr. Thomas Carlyle has been re-elected President of the Edinburgh Philosophical Institution, one of the very few public, if honorory, positions he takes pleasure in filling. The occasion ot his re- election was taken advantage of to present to the institution, in Mr. Carlyle’s name, a portrait of John Knox, beneath which he had written, “The only portrait 1 ever could believe to be a likeness of John Knox, Feb ruary, 1874.” A scheme for erecting a mes morial of Knox in Edinburgh, in which Mr. Carlyle has taken some interest,, suggested the idea of obtaining the most authentic likeness of the Great reformer. Mr. Car- lyle’s gift is an autotype copy of the engrav-~ ing made from a picture in the possession of Lord Somerville for Knight's Pictoral History.— Atheneum, t t appears that, after all, the famine in India is not such a dreadful visitation as has been generally supposed. there will be more real suffering there than was occasioned so suddenly in this coun- try on the lower Mississippi. The Viceroy ot India, under the date of April 11. says in his despatch - “Commissioner telegraphs from Northern Tirhoot: ‘Nothing like star- vation is apparent. Public health good. ve traders increasing imports. Village after village searched for hungry peop!'e. Can honest y say famine well in hand,’”’ irhoot,it will be remembered, is the sec- | tion where the famine was expected to be| A writer in the Pall Mall | (Gazette confirms the tenor of this dispatch | with extracts from letters from India dated | ibout a month earlier. One ef them states that the area of the famine had greatly narrowed, that the March crop of rice in many places appeared to be excellent, and that “what seemed probable is a famine in . few districts surrounded by a wide fringe of high prices, but scarcely more than hap-~ pens every year somewhere or other. A corrospondent of the London Standard also telegraphs from Calcutta, under the date of April 10, that the distress had been much exagerated, that the famine is everywhere under controle; in fact, he says: ‘The (overnment food accumulations are supers .bundant, and likely to go to waste.” It is ry gratifying to see this change of tone, even if some allowance is to be made for a tendencyto go to the other extreme. ‘ Vatl SHIPPING.
