Bayfield, Opera by a Canadian. A short time ago it was announced that M:.W. McDonnell, of Lindsay, had written a new opera called ‘*The Fisherman's Daughter.” Since that time the work has been submitted to one of the ablest musical aud dramatic critics of New York, and the author has received a very favourable opinion of its merits, the opera being said to ** contain the essential elements of suc- cess,’ its melodies being ‘‘ taken in charac- ter,’ which, when arranged and harmonized, ‘certainly ought to be effective.” A few additions have been recommended whicn, when made, the author desires to have opera brought out first in Toronto. Tis popularity in that city would, Mr. Me- ‘Donnell thinks, ensure its success anywhere else. Rae Claims of Greece. Ail of the Powers have assented to the claim of Greece to send a commissioner to Eyypt to assist in the deliberations of the Commission which is to fix the indemnities for the sufferers by the bombardment of Alexandria. Great Britain teok ihe initi- ative in urging the right of Greece to be re- presented. The Egyptian Gazette of Alex- andria says that in ccnsequence of repre- sentations made by one of the great Powers two commissions will be appointed to fix ae inderenity for losses i: ed by foreigners in during the whdixe. ae oe So ne erin New Tobacco Factory, RICHHO\D STRERT.
