Bright's Disease, the Formerly un curable Malady that has Fast ened Itself Upon che Boer President. Cape Town, Dec. 18.—Bright’s Dis- ease, ihe disease which a trustworthy re- port states has attacked President Kruger, of the South African Republic, » considered incurable here It i8 an fl c:ion of the Kidpeys and doctors state at it is invariably fats) The disease vas first diegoosed as a distinct disease by Dr. Bright, from whom it takes its ‘ame. It is understocd that a remedy has been discovered for Bright’s Disease in America in recent years called Dodd’s Kiduey Pills, aod reports reach Africa to the effect that cures are being made in Kogland and Australia by the same medi- cine. I: is unlikely that the Dutch of the Transvaal are acquainted with Dodd's Kidney Pills, however, they being very slow to take up with thiogs that are new, The Sweatshops. It pays to own real estate where New York’s laboring classes are con- centrated. A man who owns a large, square building in the down town east side district says that it pays him more than 20 per cent net on the money in- yested. He never has to look for ten- ants and he has no trouble in collect- ing his rents. A prosperous saloon keeper has the ground floor, and, of course, his rent is guaranteed. The floors above are rented for sweat- shops. One man hires a floor and sub- lets each window to a man to work by. If at any time he shows signs of run- ning behind with his rent a dozen win- dow tenants are eager to take the con- tract in his place. The windows rent for $5 each. This gives the man who hires the wole floor his window free, or sometimes & little more than that. The windows in this particular building are especially sought after, because there is a freight elevator, by which the heavy cloth gar- mients can be hoisted and let down from the various stories. It runs by hand power, but even tlien [t is far vet- ter than carrying the heavy burdens on the back.—New York Press. Cause For Care. “No,” said the confident youth, “I shall not trudge along in the beaten track. I shall not devote my mind to humdrum duty.” “What are you going to do?” asked the schoolmaster. “T am going to strike away from the beaten path. I’m going to leave foot- prints on the sands of time.” “Well, you want to be careful.” “T have energy and ability.” “Yes, but you want to be careful too. Trying to leave footprints on the sands of time has been the cause of a lot of people getting stuck in the mud.” A Jury et Women Who have tested the merits of Dr A. W. There was eveat rivalry between these men, and one day they were having a heated argument on the steps of the state- house at Springfield. “TL agree to leave it to the first man we meet,” said one of the wrangling lawyers fiercely. . “All right, and that will settle it onee for all. Ah! Here is Charlie —. We'll leave it to him.” “Charlie,” as the man spoken of ap- proached within hearing distance, ‘we want you to decide who is the best lawyer in Illinois. We agree to abide by your decision.” “Well,” replied Charlie, himself an old practitioner and well known in the capital city, “I plead guilty to be- ing the best lawyer in the state my- self.” “Why, Charlie, how can it be prov- ed?’ inquired the first of the two Chi- eagoans. “You don’t have to prove it,” replied the Springfield man, “I admit it, don’t 1?’ - ‘ , — ee a Seems — mitations of Dodd's Kidney Pills are legion.
