I _Birds Travel Far Across Many Seas (Canadian Press) MONTREAL, Oct 1B~0ne' of the mysteries of biology today is how oceanic birds find their way across the seas, according to V. C- Wynne- Edwards, assistant professor of Ornithology ut McGill University, who recently completed c'ght trips across the Atlantic during the sum- mer months in 'n spciai study of sea-birds and their lmbits. < The McGill ornithologlst raid the Arctic tern, a bird allied to the gull but :mailer and w`il1 more grace- ful flight, breeds in the Canadian Arctic circle and spends the winter as far away as Patagonan and An- tarctic siiores. using the ocean as a highway in its inirgations be- tween the breeding-grounds and the winter quarters in the fur south. Although terns hav1=.wcb- bed feet they dislike swimming and* never alight on the water during migration. , Mr. Edwards pointed out that be- cause they are so difficult to get at comparatively iitt`e is known of their habits, and unless one is pre- pared to make n long journey on a specially cliart:~rcd ship to the most remote southern islands, one would never see them at ull. In this country, however, they are not concemed with the future of the robin or the meadcwlark so much as that ot the iyreblrd, as emphasized in an article in the Cape Argus. The writer in the Argus says: "The interest of the lyrcbircls, and the interests oi' people who will wish to see and hear these wonderful birds in years to come, demand that discr.et action be taken. So famous have the Sher- brooke Forest Lyrenirds become of late that holiday-makers in ever- increasing numbrs are seeking them. Most of these peopie have good intentions, but many carry them out badly-they tramp through the forest and disturb the male birds, and when they chance upon a. nest they pay it so much attention that the egg invariably is deserted. Both last year and this year lyreblrds in the Dandenong Ranges have abandoned nests owing to the unrestraned admira- tion of too many people- At present however, there is little possibility of scaring the male birds, which mostly have gens into ’re2t’ss.' The brilliant fantasies of mimicry an now much less frequent, and the famous displas and dances are 'out of seas:n‘ until next Autumn. There can be no displays while the birds are moultin8. "Rn T. Littlejohn reports he saw a male bird, which a few weeks ago was singing and dancing fine- ly, slinklng around without a tail- “In a, letter published recently a correspondent claimed that the mounted specimens of iyrebirds in the Natonll Museum had their tails in the wrong positfons. The protest is justified. These speci- mens were mounted many years ago when it was though that male lyreblrds elevated their two large tail feathers into the form oi' 8. lyre. The fact is that these feath- ers fall out laterally when the bird is displaying itself. Lym~shap- ed feathers in lyrdfrds exist only in the minds of taxldermlsts of long ago and artists of today."
