Day t by Day the Number Wearing the Ne W] Fad Grows. I (BY GUARDIAN sri-:sun jcoanusroxnnsr.) N ow it`s the shirt-waist man. New York must alwayshave some sort of freak- ish sensation and it has it for fair in the individual above mentioned. He is a pro- duct ofhot weather-the natural, logical and yet eccentric product of his temperat- ure-environment; a product of the pecu- liar Summer conditions which prevail in the world‘s greatest city, a child of Broad- way needing not to be ashamed. The Shirt-Waist man as you probably know is the man who scorns to wear in public places the coat which “conventiona.lit_y” -that amateurish __":tyrant - forces npon most of the sons of men. In New York about a month ago, there arose one righteous man tosave the sweltering city. He said, “why should I be as that man who to-day is, and to-morrow is cast into the oven, through wearing a stuffy' coat in weather so hot that even the :ice-man is prostrated.” Whereupon he got him a shirt of pattern so rich and aggressive that those who met him heard the music 3 as of a brass-band, got him an enamelled belt, and sallied forth on Broadway. And men seeing him were led to goand do like- wise so that now the city is agog with this new star in the firmament, fthe [Shirt- Waist Man, beside whom the \Ma_n Be- hind the Gun looks like unto] thirty _ Sestercli. Ou Broadway in this fearful weather, in which people are dropping like poisoned flies, you can count the Shirt Waist Man hy dozens. His shirts are a perfefrb ri0t Of color, in stripes and spangles and squares. Haberdashers are sitting up late at night to devise patterns of suflicient violence to commend them to the MAN BEHIND THE SHIRT. There has been quite a divertissement created in the swell restaurants as to admitting* the Shirt Waist Man to sit at meat. The World got one of the “new” mcn to try it on the Waldorf, Shanley’s and Rector‘s, the other evening-at all of three of which places a glass of water and a tookpick can be readily had for a quarter. The Shirt Waist Man was refused service at the' Waldorf and Shan- ley‘s but was welcomed at Rector’s, pro' bably the most expensive place at which toleat in the world. There are only one or two food-factories in town in fact to whom the new man is not persona in grata. But he flourishes in beauty and comeliness, and day by day the accessions to his ranks grow. No doubt next sum- mer will see a coatless, braces-less, per- spiration-less N ew York, and a poet must arise to sing another “ Song of the Shirt." FITZ FITS AGAIN. Robert Fitzimmons, alias “Ruby Bob" “Fitz," “Kangaroo,"|a_so called:an “also- ran" and a. “has been” and a “back- number," appeared by “special request" last evening at Madison Square Garden in a. little controversy with Mr. Gus Ruhlin. “Fitz” has been, by merit raised to the had eminence of the false god of American heathenism. And the worship of Baal in this fashion prevails extensively ina land that is horrified at the barbarity of Spanish bull-fights but delights in seeing creatures in human shape pummeling one another into shape- lessness. Robert was booked for defeat by all the wise guys, who called-past tense be sure-him the “old man.” In the second roundhowever, Robert handed out a petty little collection of solar plexus, “_jol*s" and jars, also “swings” and “hooks” and “uppcrcuts’ such as soon sent Mr. Ruhlin into the happy land of dreams. It was all so “sudden." Before that vast audience of 12000 people, delighting in this sort of al- leged “manliness,” and including every “sport” ofnote in America, Fitzimmons i _ _ _ _is Rlxeumatism _*The cause -_ir°'Uri_u ’ inthe blood.
