Mr. Munro is a good man. Tne drunkenness and rowdyism preva- lent yesterday were disgraceful. But while men thirk it a venial offence to’ voluntarily take leave of the reason with which they are endowed, and by which they are dis- tinguished from beasts, and while men {and wowen teo) are found so abandoned as to sell drink to those whe are already drunk, such scenes will be witnessed. We fear that too many in this Provimce are not yet realy for the operation of the Scott Act. fill men are awakened to the enormity of making beasts of themselves, repress! e legislation will be of little avail. - < —a-+o = THE ol rus is entirely astray in its recent recantatien. its original statement—made on the sutherity of the EXAMINER, that the Licensing Board recently gave permission for the ‘‘issuing of no less than thirty-seven licenses. for the sale of spirituous liquors within this City” was quite correct. lt was hewever, subsequently feund that several of the houses for which permission to obtain licenses was granted, were disqualified ; and thus, ax we stated some days ag®, the num- ber was reduced to thirty or thirty one. The editor of the Argus should, before charging the Ex; mINer with an erroneous statement in this matter, have obtained the faets. The information on which its recantation is based is ail wrong. Tanner has triumphed. Whether he has merely succeeded in deluding the people, er whether he has really fasted forty days and forty nights, he has triumphed. Sup- posing the test to have been a bona Jide one, the result is exceedingly interesting and, indirecily, very important. It is well to have some idea of the amount of depriva- tion hiuman nature is capable of enduring. Physicians, especiaily, will profit by a more accurate knowledge of the powers ef the human system ; for they may, by reason of such’ knowledge, be able to correc: their practice im certain cases. Dr. Tanner is not, however, worthy of general imitation, unless. indeed, he can show that, while fasting, hoe is able to continue working as usual It would be a great gain to the world if peeple could learn to work without eating. but fasting without working, is as wrong as it is unnatural. Work is the norma! duty of mankind, re ne .__ em + - Gathering of the Clans. Easy in the forenoon the members of the Ce liedonian Seciety formed in procession at their Hall, Queen street, and to the martial airs of the band and bagpipes, marched to the beautiful field of Hon. J. C. Pope, on St. Peter's Road, where the gathering was held. Within an hour after the precession arrived the tents were thronyed and the ring in which the games were conducted was surreunded by thous- sands. No time was lest in commedcing the games. They were witnessed with much interest by His Honer the Lieutenant Governor, Mrs. Haviland and family, the Minisier of Marine, the Mayor of Charioite- town, and famuly, Frederick De St. C. Breck sh, Esq., M. P., Edward Hackett, Esq., M. P., A. C. McDonald, Esq., M. P., A. MacNab, Superintendent P. E. 1. Rail- way, Wm. Campbell, C. P. W., Neil McKelvie, Iisq., Angus McMillan, > of Summerside, Alexander Beaten, Esq., Hast Point, the Press and several of the Clergy. The competitors in ailetic sports were very numerous. The cifferent games were sharply contested and were kept up with much spirit during the day. We regret to state that the pleasure of the «ccasion was greatly marred by the reseice of a gang of roughs who appear to ave in object in attending and disturbing all public assemblies. The same gang at- tend jorse races, Benevolent Irish Society Picnics, and ether popular gatherings and by their ruflianly acts succeed in destroy- ing the pleasure of the day and casting dis- e on the voramittees, who are in no way} lamesble. We hepe the Committee of the Caledonia Club will make an example of these ruffians by a public prosecution. The following is the PRIZE LIST.
