You have done me the honour oi electing me to represent your district ior nearly 80 years, and I have done my best to iurther your interests and the interests oi our Province as a whole. For two tour-year periods I have been your only representative on the government side of the House. Due to the largeness oi this dis- trict I have not been able to visit You Peflonllly as often as I would wish. for it one meets with even two persons per day. it would take gar 300 days to meet all the elec- rs. CHANGED Tl MES During the 00 years since 1 was first elected to represent you there have been great changes in our standard of living, and a great increase in what we expect Governments to do for us. Farm work has been greatly mechaniz- ed: money invested in Farm Ma- chinery is in many Instances izreater than the value of the land cultivated. Governments have be- come more paternal - 30 years r we had no Old Age Pensions, No Family Allowances. No Wid- ows Allowances. We had no T. B. Sanitorium and our death rate from Tuberculosis was the high- est in Canada. Our Infirmary was very inade- auate, and only housed the really destitute. We doled out 10 doi- lars per year to those we did not have room for in the institution. The Department of Agriculture consisted of n Commissione and a Secretary. Our poultry flocks were riddled with Airan T. B. and chickens died in thousands of various infections diseased. Ani- mal health was attended to by a few practising vetcrinaries. There was no Denartmenl of In- dustry or Marketing, and no Tour- ist Bureau, The Department of Public Works was just becoming road-conscious. There was no Power Machinery. and roads were supposed to be kept In repair by a system of Statue Labor. helped out by a few horse-drawn graders. There were no paved roads. and no snow plows. THE OPPOSITION 1 In listening to the opposition addresses both in the Legislature and on the Radio. I have been 'un- pressed by iheir lack of consis- tency. On the one hand they criticize the Liberal Government (or their niggardly expenditure in all their departments that turn around and condemn them for increasing the expenditure in those same departments. BATTLE CRIBS If there was nothing left over for a future dale. your representa- tives might as well resign. I do not know how Slogans or Battle Cries original:-ii. They have been used since ancient times to incite and encourage the friendly and to strike terror to the hearts and minds of enemy combatants dur- ing the heart oi battle. We know the Spartans used these devices at the Battle oi Thermopylae; our Saxon forefathers shouted ”out Out" when they fought the Nor- mans on the blood-stained sod oi Lsonlac-Hill. In not so distant times we find the Scottish Highland Clans crying their Slogans when Dirk and Claymore rang on brass- studded targcs; and the war-pipes walled out the' pibroc amid the din oi light. The slogan of the Liberal Party has always been "Equal oppor- tunity for all. special privileges for none." Our Conservative friends have had almost as many slogans as they had names for their party. ilurinu lhe Reciprocity Election of 1911. the slogan of the Liberal- Conscrvative party as they then called themselves. was "No trick or trade with the yankeea". They won that contest and the hands of the clock were set back 30 years. In the Dominion Election of 1930. the "National Conservatives" as they then called themselves. used the slogan "We will blast our way into the Markets of the Campbell, Jones and Mathesoa and the personnel of Governments has changed many times, so lllerel has been no lack of change. The Matheson Government is now asking for your support. whyl should we exchange it for inex- perienced candidates whose only thought seems to be "It's time for a change".
